Swing away Tire and jerry can holder
Swing away Tire and jerry can holder
After a couple years of carrying the oversize spare and jerry can on the original modified spare tire mount attached to the rear door, I noticed a crack begining in the sheet metal of the door. It was time to move the weight to someplace stronger. I posted a question in the Zukiworld forum for info and someone turned me onto a kit for the hinge, which is one of the major pieces and hard to fab. Once I had that and the latch, the rest was like building a puzzle, just fit the pieces. The main tube on the bottom is 2x2 1/8" square steel. It is mounted directly to my Trail Tough bumper via the hinge. A hole saw and temporary jig were used to cut a section out of the bumper to fit the hinge into. The hole saw was also used extensively in cutting the tubing to fit. The swing hinge is a kit ( a trailer axle and axle sleeve with bearings and races) from a 4x4 supplier. The tire mount is also part of the original Jerry can to spare mount that was cut and used . I was originally going to build the whole thing out of square stock for ease of assembly, but a good friend of mine suggested it would look much better in round stock. He, his brother and I bent the DOM tubing on their bender, then welded it all up in their shop. It wouldn't have come out this nice without their help. The swing away provides for more than just strength, it completely eliminated the "clunking" I've been trying to track down for a couple of years now. The noise was the rear door hopping up and down on the hinges when going over bumps. It was quite annoying and until I built this I could never find it! The carrier can fit a 32" spare, swings out of the way of the rear door with ease, and locks solidly back into place with no rattling whatsoever when trailing.
