Babar the Elephant

Words by Jean de Brunhoff                                         Music by Francis Poulenc

“In the great forest, a little elephant was born.”

Thus begins the classic children’s book The Story of Babar the Little Elephant, written and illustrated by Jean de Brunhoff.  French composer Francis Poulenc set this beloved tale to music at the request of his three-year-old cousin Sophie, and the result is the thirty- minute concert piece Babar the Elephant for piano and narrator.  Listeners of all ages will be delighted by the fresh, evocative music and the familiar story of Babar’s journey from orphan to King of the Elephants.  Pianist and narrator Barbara Browne brings Babar to vivid life for audiences to enjoy.
