I just had to take a picture of all these diamonds and gems it was CRAZY!!! That’s around 400,000 $ worth of stuff in front of me!!! lolll Ok so me my mom and her friend we went to this shop to look at some jewellery, it’s called the diamond watch shop... It was one of the most interesting experiences ever; it was like you are in a movie.... So we walk in the store its not that large but on both sides of the wall are rows and rows of diamond jewellery, watches and other accessories... My mom in particular wanted some large earrings and my aunty wanted to buy a set for her daughter but there was nothing that really appealed to both of them... the store keeper realized this and as we were about to walk out he goes to us "what in particular are you ladies looking for?" my mom goes, something that is appealing to us the minute we look at it, and she told him that there was nothing here she liked... the store keeper then goes "follow me to the back room of the store" we all look at each other , and think to ourselves where the heck is he taking us, what could there be possibly be in the small back room that he wants to show us!!! So we followed him, into the back, down a small hallway that was dark and dingy, and then in front of us all of a sudden was this massive Vault, similar to the ones you see in banks... he dials a number, and rotates the vault and opens it.... Inside the vault is this room... it’s twice as large as the store, and it’s absolutely beautiful! It’s got golden marble floors, crystal chandeliers everywhere, the walls are inlayed with marble and wood carved paneling, and comfortable white leather sofas and chairs! I was in shock! The room was fit for a king! So then the store keeper takes us to a huge chest of drawers in the corner of the room with at least 100 pull out drawers... and he goes to us " so you want to see something nice now" He starts pulling out the drawers one by one and in each one are the most gorgeous diamond and precious gems sets i have ever seen! He tells us to choose which ever one we find eye catching and set it on the coffee table... my mom, my aunt, and me were so shocked we didn’t know what to do... all of them were so stunning! So finally after 1/2 hour we set these ones aside as these were our favorite ones.... we even got coffee and tea while we decided which one we liked best! lol in my mind i'm thinking... so this is the life style of the rich and famous eh? I could EASILY get used to this! LOL The aunty liked the ruby and diamond one in the center for her daughter but we are going to go back with her daughter to see which one she likes best... but man, this was one experience I would never forget!

Mother Stands for...
The role of women in a Muslim society was never more marked that when watching the interactions of families. I have my own views upon the separation of responsibilities between the genders in the countries I visited, and will come back to them when I have appropriate wording. It's worth saying now though that one of the biggest, and I guess most pleasant surprises of my trip was watching what I had always imagined to be quite supressed, submissive women exert themselves in such a positive and strong way within the family environment. On the first or second day in Istanbul I was walking behind a couple. The man in jeans, a designer t-shirt and the finest pair of leather shoes. The women clad entirely in black, her entire body bar her eyes covered. This was not something I was used to, understood or even agree with and I was to be honest pitying the woman. That was until I realised that for all his 'bling' and his society given position of power, the man was as hen-pecked and brow-beaten as they come. The woman was leading him through the streets of the Bazaar dragging him into every handbag, clothing and perfume store there was and demanding, not asking, demanding that he purchased the items she wanted. As I followed them her bag filled up with some very expensive perfumes, two pairs of shoes and, most remarkably, some more than revealing items of underwear. The whole time it was clear that this person, this stranger under the cloth was very much in charge. She was covered but not cowed. I cannot state that every female I saw held such a position of strength in their lives and culture dictated that I spoke to very few in my entire 3 months. What I will say though is that this show of strength, even in the smallest ways was repeated over and over again during my travels. I will put the above thoughts into more interesting form soon but for now I hope this shot captures some of what I saw during my trip. Two very strong, very controlled and loving mothers who were without a doubt in charge of their family and their lives in a way that I had never really imagined.
