These were the existing tiles (and the existing carpet!) at the front the same irreparable condition that they were in when we bought the house... After pulling these up we discovered that they were placed directly on top of the unfinished wooden floor!!!! ...The more projects we do the more we discover all of the short cuts that the previous owners repeatedly took just for the sake of cosmetics... Wow.

Here is what it looks like when you remove all the tile from a bathroom. At least a 50 year old bathroom. See that hole by the door? Some of the subfloor was completely dust under the tile. We found out why - someone sawed a floor joist in half - in HALF - to make room for the sewer pipe for the toilet. Understandably, the floor joist sagged on either side.
