"when you are flat on your back....
"when you are flat on your back....
....there is nowhere to look but up." That's how I'm feeling about this sad old hardwood floor--stained and varnished in places, bare wood in others, wood putty holding splinters in place, sticky white mystery residue running down the middle, it really can't get much worse. No money for professional refinishing at the moment. Goo Gone and all manner of sticky-stuff removal have failed on the white strip. So I slapped a coat of stain over the whole thing yesterday and it looks okay, better by far than the original. But I don't think I'll coat it with polyurethane because that would make the professional refinishing I plan to have done down the line a bigger nightmare still. I'm thinking large area rug and call it a day/month/year until I have the floors refinished.

Through the balusters These floors are actually a plank subfloor made of 3/4" softwood (pine). I'm told it's a common type of subfloor in older homes like mine. I've read that it provides sufficient support for a hardwood floor, but you've got to lay the boards perpendicular to these planks -- that's lots of short little pieces up the hall!
