Wyming Brook
Wyming Brook
On a quick evening jaunt I walked down Wyming Brook (and the wood that follows it). It has a surprising flow of water considering it is not far for the top of the moor where the water has come from, and it had been a dry few days preceeding. But the Dark Peak moors above act as a sponge that release water regularly down the many becks. This one feeds into Rivelin reservoir. The wood is a mixed plantation, with conifers, beech and chestnut along side ash and rowan and others.

DI has had an interesting history. At various points in time it has been Australia's only communication link with the UK and New Zealand via a wireless telegraph cable link, the site of sea battles in WW1 between Germany (the Emden) and Australia (HMAS Sydney), and a coconut plantation with up to 2000 residents. This is part of the leftovers from the latter I think - the infrastructure has all been pushed into the sea.
