Mindfulness Meditation & MBCT
After losing my mobility suddenly my emotional state quickly became as fragile as my physical body. I needed to find a way to cope with my new enforced lifestyle whilst remaining (relatively) sane and the best mother I could possibly be.
I began using Mindfulness 8 years ago to help me cope with the chronic pain and depression that followed such a life-changing event.
Put simply Mindfulness means to pay attention to your present emotions, thoughts and sensations as a non-judgemental observer. It enabled me to cope with my high pain levels and physical limitations (and the anxiety and depression that accompanied these) with compassion and acceptance, rather than constantly battling against my circumstances.
There have been various scientific studies into Mindfulness which proves that it increases activity in the area of the brain that calms down emotional responses, as well as slowing breathing rate, blood pressure and heart rate.
After initially training to teach meditation with Sandy Newbigging,(author of The Hay House Mind Calm Meditation book), I was honoured to be accepted onto the select Teacher Training programme run by Shamash Alidina, author of Mindfulness for Dummies, the third best selling ‘for dummies’ book in the world. Shamash has had the privilege of training with the fathers of ‘Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction’, Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD and Saki Santorelli PhD through the Center for Mindfulness in Massachusetts, United States. He has also trained extensively with the Centre of Mindfulness at Bangor University in Wales. He has also attended retreats with Thich Nhat Hanh, the Dalai Lama, Sharon Salzberg, Christina Feldman and more.
I wish to help people use Mindfulness to overcome stress, anger, anxiety, depression and cope with chronic health conditions and pain.
Mindfulness takes time and patience and I coach on a one-to-one basis (in person or via Skype) and also offer the traditional 8 week MBCT course in a group environment.
