Balasubramanian Raman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee since September 2013. He had been with the Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee from September 2004 to September 2013, where he was an Associate Professor and head of the Computer Vision, Graphics and Image Processing Laboratory.  He was a Visiting Professor and a member of the Computer Vision and Sensing Systems Laboratory in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Windsor, CANADA during May - August 2009. He was a Lecturer of Computer Science and Information Systems at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India in 2003-04. He was a Post Doctoral Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and a member of the Visualization Research laboratory (VIZ Lab), at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA from July 2002 to April 2003. He was also a Post Doctoral fellow in the Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science (now the Department of Computer Science, CS), and member of the Computational Intelligence Research Laboratory (CIRL), at University of Missouri-Columbia (MU), Missouri, USA, from October 2001 to June 2002. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics (2001) from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. He obtained his B.Sc and M.Sc in Mathematics from University of Madras in 1994 and 1996 respectively. 

He has held visiting positions in the Department of Computer Science, School of Computing as well as SeSaMe Research centre, National University of Singapore, SINGAPORE, School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinag, MALAYSIA, Faculty of Computing and Informatics, Multimedia University, Cyberjaya Campus, MALAYSIA and Department of Computer Science, University at Albany - State University of New York (SUNY), NY, USA. He was a Guest Scientist in the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, ITALY. Under his coach, the team "the 65th Bit", comprises of Sharat Ibrahimpur, Dipit Grover and Tarun Goyal from IIT Roorkee grabbed 60th position in the 37th Annual World Finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest held in Saint Petersburg, RUSSIA in 2013. The team secured 25th position among Asian teams and 1st among other Indian Teams.

He is listed in Marquis Who's Who in the World 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and also in Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 2007. So far he has published 95 International Journals, 100 Conference Proceedings (including ICPR, ACPR, IEEE-IJCNN, IEEE-ICIP, ICIAR, ('07, '11), ICVGIP('00, '08, '10, '16), IEEE-TENCON, IEEE-ICAPR, PReMI, ICISP, IEEE-INDICON ('08,'16)),  7 Book Chapters and a Technical report. His areas of research include Computer Vision: Optical Flow Problems, Fractional Transform Theory, Wavelet Analysis, Image and Video Processing, Multimedia Security: Digital Watermarking and Encryption Techniques,  Biometrics, Content Based Image and Video Retrieval, Hyperspectral & Microwave Imaging, Visualization and Volume Graphics. 

He is a reviwer of ICVGIP'04, IEEE-IJCNN'07 , '09,'11,  IEEE-INDICON'09, IEEE-ICCCT'10, Pattern Recognition Letters, International Journal of Computer Mathematics, Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision, Optical Engineering, International Journal of  Signal and Image Processing, International Journal of  Computers and Applications, Defence Science Journal, Journal of Optics and Laser Technology, IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics & Security, IEEE-T-IP, PR, International Journal of Wavelets, Multiresolution and Information Processing, Communications and Computer Security and Mathematical & Computer Modelling. So far he has guided 14 Ph.D students (presently guiding 7 students), 100+ Masters Dissertations and 25 undergraduate Projects.  

He is the recipient of BOYSCAST fellowship (awarded by DST, India).  He is also the recipient of "Outstanding Teacher Award 2010" awarded by IIT Roorkee on Teachers' day (05/09/2010). He is a member of IEEE Society, Uttar Pradesh section and acted as a Joint Secretary of the executive committee in the IEEE Uttarkhand Sub-section from July 2011 to March 2013. Presently he is a Secretary of the executive committee in the IEEE Uttarkhand Sub-section.
