This photo was taken by Jim Salisbury. "Bas" hailed from the Midlands but in the 1920's when work was short he moved to the West Country. He then moved to Cheshire on joining the famous Foden's Band with whom he played Second Baritone and, chiefly, Eb Bass. In those days players were found work within the factory ( Basil was a skilled metalworker). They were also found houses, too. Bas could recall touring South Africa in the 1930's with Foden's Band. During summer seasons Foden's Band could be playing one week in Eastbourne, the next in Scarborough. Bandsmen would meet their wives briefly on Sandbach Railway Station on Sundays, to hand over laundry and pick up clean clothes; then they were off on their travels again. Basil was a member of Foden's when they won all the major band contests, led by Fred Mortimer, father of Harry, Alex and Rex. In retirement Basil taught brass instruments in schools in the Crewe area. Basil conducted Crewe Co-op. Band, then a band which was part of the Crewe ATC Squadron, from the time of World War II to the early 1970's. At the time Basil took over the band it was conducted by Harry Mortimer but Harry became part of ENSA during the war effort and went on post-war to work for the BBC until his retirement. I remember him describing recording sessions when wax cylinders were in use. Wax cylinders were for a fixed length of time. If there was not a natural break in a piece of music, e.g. a movement coming to an end, tempi were increased to ensure the piece could fit onto the cylinder.
