Railway protection repair and maintenance corps (rpr&mc) A combat and engineering corps set up by the Irish national army to defend and repair the nation’s rail network from attacks by the Irish republican army shortly after the outbreak of the Irish civil war in 1922 In June 1922 civil war broke out in Ireland between those who did not accept the 1921 Anglo Irish treaty and those who did accept the treaty. Those who fought against the treaty were known as the anti-treaty Irish republican army or the irregulars. Those who fought for the treaty were known as pro treaty Irish republican army, Free State army, or the national army. Within weeks of the outbreak of the Irish civil war the well-equipped and determent newly establish national army had Dublin in their control. The IRA realizing that direct combat with the Irish national army was not an option and therefor adopted tactics that had worked for them in the past against the British (guerrilla warfare). Some officer of the national army were themself x IRA men and were well aware of the damage that there old comrades could inflict on the infrastructure of the newly formed free state. With Dublin in their control the national army turned their attention to the rest of the country and some surprise seaborne landings along the west coast including limerick, Kerry, and Cork caught the IRA off-guard and after some tuff street fighting drove the IRA for the most part out of the cities. The roads in the country side of Ireland in 1922/23 by today’s standards would be classed as poor’ were a broken axel or buckled wheel were common place for military vehicles. The thousand or so vehicles left to the national army by the withdrawing British forces were for the best part in a sorry state of repair some haven seen service in France during the great war and as a result the rail system was just as important to the army as it was to the private sector. Ireland at the time relied heavily on the rail system,, communication,, travel,, goods transportation,, the very basic supplies including post were transported by rail almost every station big or small would have had almost Daily deliveries including livestock. By September 1922 protection of the railway had become a priority, the destruction of bridges,, train derailment,, attacks on rail station,, tracks torn and blown up,, the closure of lines for long periods of time and the laying off of thousands of railway workers all added up in cost and general chaos to the running of the rail network as well as the country. In the first months of the civil war the IRA carried out 113 attacks on the rail network destroying 60 bridges, 16 signal cabins, 3 train derailments, and several rail buildings burnt. During the course of the war attacks on the rail network was a Daily accordance with one bridge been destroyed 15 times, rail staff were often held at gun point or looked up in sheds by armed men as they searched the mail bags for information on the national army or set up ambushes to attack passing trains, station houses were burnt and would not reopen until a block house was set up by the corps, IRA sympathizer would attack from within the rail company, two such incidents took place at the Inchicore works in Dublin the first took place on the 17/July/1922 when an armoured locomotive which was under construction was damaged and put out of action, the second took place in December 1922 when an locomotive in steam was allowed to run off through the shed gates smashing into armoured cars (road vehicles) which were under construction at the works The corps was in the front lines of the war from the start, regaining and repairing the rail lines with pick shovel & rifle under difficult condition and made do with whatever equipment and engineering skill they had to restore the network. On September 26th 1922 a colonel Charles Russell of the national army was authorised to take charge of the repair and protection of the railways, Colonel Russell served as a pilot with the royal flying corps in the Great War and was also involved in the construction of the Irish air force at Baldonnel in 1922. A hands on firm officer who lost no time setting things in motion. armoured trains had already been built the first of which entered serviced on the 10th of august, the army had some bridges already guarded and security tightened up including the arrest and laying off of suspected IRA sympathizer from within the railway company’s. Twelve armoured cars known as armoured lancias were appointed to the corps, the lancia and the railways already had a history together as the lancia were original designed and built at the GS&WR (great southern & western railways) inchicore works Dublin in 1920/21 for the British/RIC forces.
