This is exactly as it was shot..why? Because this is a special place to me. I was once a tender young lad....hard to see now, but true it is. My prime days were gleefully miserable in this fine neighborhood. I look back fondly, and have a little tear in my eye for the beautiful time that I lived in. Clarksville in the eighties. My Champion 24" Cruzer on HIT...building cool bikes, riding with my buddies, eating psychedelic drugs smoking crap bammer weed, chasing young nubiles, and trying to act happy. I have been bummed my whole life..waiting for the rug to get pulled out from under me. When it didn't...I always set the damn rug on fire. Life will take a shit on me everytime...and if not..well, I'll teach it a damned lesson for throwing me a damn curve ball of happiness and security. Damn life. Hahahaaaaa....so, I saw this sign, and a gnarly rush of memories flooded me. Some dude in his late fifties was watching me shoot this as he walked westerly on 12th Street to West Lynn... Instead of focusing on all the memories of riding my skateboard around the neighborhood barefoot, or listening to my buddy Alfred honk his horn as he was being chased by the cops to say "Hi!"...all I could worry about was this stranger thinking I was some dumb tourist who didn't understand how cool this sign was....I wanted to say.."Hey MAN! I have a history with this sign, too! I have a lot of love and respect for this sign, and it's place in this neighborhood! I am a Texan through and through...my great-grandmother, Judith Gassiot died at 107 years old a "'Blue Bonnet Treasure of Texas' in Livingston,TX...my mom has the plaque she recieved on her 100th birthday to prove it, BUDDY! So don't judge ME!" Yeah, I am that miserable and self-centered. He was probably actually digging my little Canon camera...maybe he was thinking... "Fuck, that's is so cool...one day I will have a camera as nice as that young man's! I bet he is a true Texan Patriot...through and through....thank you God for bringing such fine men into this world!" But, no...I am an asshole. The cool part is that our pal, Alfred used to get chased by the Austin cops constantly. He'd steal a car, he steal a motorcycle...whatever..and get into these full-on chases. He called it "Rallying!". Austin was still a smaller community back then..so, he'd have like one or two cars after him...not a gauntlet. No shootings. No roadblocks...just a siren. And Alfred. And Alfred's horn. He'd just honk. He'd make laps if he saw you were home...just fully lap your house multiple times in hot pursuit. Sometimes you could hear him if his window was down...he'd yell "RALLY!!" and honk the horn. We'd all laugh. "Oh, there's Alfie on a Rally!" He'd loop back around again shortly if he was able... "Honk! Honk!"...."RAAAAAALLLLY!!" Later, sometimes the same night...sometimes days later, he'd come by and load up the bong..."Did you guys hear my RALLY the other night?!!" Alfie O.D.ed a few years back. Austin is a city. With cops. And roadblocks. But, here's Anthony's... And I am still trying to act nonchalant and happy. Feh.
