Denden-Daiko 15/365 {Explored}
Our Daily Challenge "Round" 15/365 EXPLORED #27 2/5/2011 Several years ago, our family became involved with the AFS program and hosted an Italian exchange student for a year. It was a great experience and recommend it highly. The next year we acted as liaison to another student who happened to be from Japan. She brought for us this little den-den drum from her hometown. From Wiki: The den-den daiko is a Japanese pellet drum. It has two heads and is suspended on a rod, with beads or pellets hanging on threads on either sides of the body of the drum. The drum sounds when it is turned on its axis from side to side, causing the beads to strike the heads of the drum. The drum is found in other cultures as well, including, but not limited to Tibet, Mongolia, India, China, Taiwan and Korea. It is often used in religious ritual, but it is often sold as a children's toy or as a noisemaker at festival stalls. The drum played a central role in the movie The Karate Kid, Part II. Strobist: SB600 Rosco gelled w/Storaro Cyan + Green 90 @ 1/16 power, 28mm zoom fired close range from behind subject onto jet black seamless with Yongnuo RF602 radio trigger. 3' Octobox 500W Starlite tungsten from 2' away angled down & camera right. BC Service Sock Hop 2010
September 2010: During Welcome Weekend at BC, more than 350 members of the Class of 2014 made their way to Conte Forum for the first-ever BC Service Sock Hop to benefit local organizations, children’s hospitals and U.S. troops overseas. Students learned how easy it can be to reach out to others, even with something as simple as a sock, as they made sock dolls and monsters for children at the Italian Home in Boston and Franciscan Hospital in Brighton, Mass; stuffed toe socks with school supplies, gadgets and gizmos for kids at the BC Campus School for the multiply handicapped; made sock animal toys for the MSPCA shelter in Boston, and stuffed hundreds of Under Armour socks with practical necessities for U.S. troops such as toothbrushes, eye drops, granola bars, magazines, pens, and the like. The event was sponsored by BC's Office of Student Programs.
