Captain Spock by Playmates Toys
Captain Spock by Playmates Toys
Playmates Toys apparently had a broad license to make Star Trek toy figures. They started with 5-inch figures, then moved up to 9- and 12-inch scales with cloth outfits. But given the large canvas of a sixth-scale figure and the built-in appeal to an older collector, it's disappointing that the final products reflect a mass-market mentality of simplified construction. The figure's articulation is more on-par with a Barbie than a GI Joe. You can't pose Spock here with his hands behind his back like he usually does in the movies. Costumes are constructed as jumpsuits that velcro closed at the back, even Spock's which is supposed to be a separate jacket top that opens in front. A slight plus in Spock's favor is the foil thread simulating the chain clasps of the uniform, but sewing the shoulder rank strap as two separate halves (front and back) is atrocious to this Trekker! The big saving grace for this Spock figure is the immaculate head sculpt that depicts Leonard Nimoy's aged face in the movies (most of the line feature wrinkle-free portraits of the other characters). Overall I think the large figures weren't worth the effort, and were a symbol of the '90s Trek merchandising boom that made things for the sake of collectibility. I don't remember if these large figures were individually numbered like their small counterparts.

New things are coming to Downtown Disney's Lego Imagination Center in the Marketplace! As you can see, the construction barrier is keeping much of what's taking place under wraps! Here is little bit of what you'll see in the future: A 12-foot T-Rex and larger than life Titan XP Robot. Special portholes showcase LEGO motion activated scenes. Inside is a gigantic Pick A Brick wall - the world's largest - featuring bricks of every conceivable color and variety! Newly improved demonstration area with hands-on events, like mural construction and beat-the-clock building contests.
