The Moms on Call Guide to Basic Baby Care: The First 6 Months
Laura Hunter and Jennifer Walker are on-call pediatric nurses and mothers. While answering parents' questions, they realized new parents lack the basic information needed to care for their infants. Moms and dads no longer have the advantage of grandma living next door to share her years of wisdom. They're on their own--and they need help.81% (14)
This simple guide addresses real-life, basic infant care needs for new moms and dads. Topics range from feedings and bedtime routines to common medical questions. The included instructional DVD gives parents visual step-by-step demonstrations of how to care for a newborn to six-month-old.

And bath time is as good a time as any! I breast fed my first child for 5 months then got virtually forced into bottle feeding her by the health visitor to increase her weight on the charts. Which is ironic as being on bottle feeds made no difference what so ever to her development on these 'charts'. So I vowed with my 2nd child to do things my way, until me or my baby had had enough. We managed 22 months :o) An old photograph but a good cause. worldbreastfeedingweek.org/ *Join the World in Breastfeeding Action this year!* * Draw attention to the role of the Ten Steps in improving breastfeeding rates. * Renew action by health systems, health care providers and communities to make breastfeeding the easy choice for women. * Inform people everywhere of the risks of artificial feeding, and the role of breastfeeding for children’s development and lifelong health and the health of mothers. * Enable mothers to enjoy full support for breastfeeding in health care systems and beyond. WBW 2010 Rationale * Health care facilities play a vital role in the establishment of breastfeeding. * The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding provide a supportive pathway enabling women to achieve their breastfeeding intentions and guiding the training of healthcare workers in breastfeeding support. * World Breastfeeding Week this year commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration that called for implementation of the Ten Steps in all maternity facilities. * During these 20 years, more than 20,000 maternities, or about 28% of all maternities in the world, have fully implemented the Ten Steps and have been certified by the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). * During this time, rates of exclusive breastfeeding have increased significantly. * However, reduced BFHI programming worldwide, inadequate training, and weakened compliance with the Ten Steps in accredited maternities are contributing to stagnant or declining exclusive breastfeeding rates in many settings. * It is time to revisit this approach and to determine where we must go from here. 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding 1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff. 2. Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy. 3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. 4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth. 5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants. 6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk unless medically indicated. 7. Practice rooming- in - allow mothers and infants to remain together - 24 hours a day. 8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand. 9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants. 10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.Madisyn Grace, at Two Months
September 25, 2009. You grew alot over the past month. You look at people more, you wake me up every other morning at 4 in the morning just to be held. You notice people more and when people moves thier hands around you, you look follow thier hands really good. Your already trying to walk. And you smile so much now. When you cry, all we got to do is open the blinds so sunlight can come in, you start smiling and you be so relaxed. I wake in the morning sometimes to see how you doing, and you look straight at me and smile. Your eyes are so big now, they were dark blue but now there changing to a grayish olive green dark blue but somedays its changing to a violety blue. We take you outside more, like to parks, you love nature. Your getting bigger, you can fit into your newborn clothes now. Last time i went to the doctors they said you were 7pounds & 8ounces. Your hair is turning to a light brown. You eat every 4 to 5 hours. Still dont like your diaper's changed. Your really relaxed when i give you your bath, Although you do a pee waterfall everytime your in it. Your strawberry birthmark on your stomach is getting red'er and starting to come out more now. Your starting to coo and make baby noises you never done before. I already bought you 4 halloween costumes. Your really spoiled, you want to be held, bounced, sometimes just to look at someone. Your face gotten chunkier, and cheeks. We feed you every 3 to 4 hours and you gotten chunky over the weeks because we started giving you more formula than what we were suppose to give you. You love your little mermaid stroller. Your eyelashes are so long and dark brown. Cant wait for your first halloween. Love, Your Mommy.

The next time your child asks you for a dog, you'll want to say yes. Because unlike real puppies, the Tekno robotic puppy isn't a lot of work -- he's just a lot of fun. He walks forward, backward, right, left, and expresses emotions through color-changing eyes and puppy whimpers. Just like any young pup, Tekno is perfectly content to chomp on his bone and play fetch with his ball. With the included wireless translator, you'll always know exactly what this pooch is thinking and eventually he says several English phrases. He also impresses his audience with a wide selection of tricks, such as dance, speak, sing, and more. Children ages three through eight will be delighted as they learn how to program and work this amazing robotic toy.
Return of the Robot Dog
Everyone's favorite robotic pet is back with a new design and updated software features. Improved walking animation gives Tekno smooth, realistic movement and magnetic sensors allow him to perform advanced actions. For instance, Tekno loves to be scratched behind the ears or patted on the head. He reacts to sound, sight, and touch, and obeys several radio-controlled commands. Behaviors are launched by pressing the sensors on his head, neck, nose, and side. Children can't resist his floppy ears, wagging tail, and light-up puppy dog eyes. And should you decide Tekno needs an animal companion, he interacts with other robotic puppies. (A small warning: this toy is packaged tightly, so a small screwdriver may be necessary to remove it from the box.) Tekno measures 13-by-10 inches and requires four AA batteries and three AG13 batteries (not included).
When you bring this puppy home, he is programmed to act like a typical eight-week old puppy. As a great toy to teach children about responsibility, he knows how long it's been since he has been fed and he is quick to remind his owner when he needs playtime. This dog's internal clock wakes him up in the morning and he can also wake up your child with an alarm. Light level sensors let Tekno know when its time to sleep and he snores like a real dog. And like most real dogs, this high-tech pet gets smarter as he ages, and soon he will be singing and performing card tricks on command.
