Grammatical gender is only very loosely associated with natural distinctions of sex

Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Critical Reader
From gender issues in Desperate Housewives, to race in Ugly Betty, gender biases in video games, and portrayals of the American family in Extreme Makeover, to analyzes of new genres like fandom and social media - no other book is so successful in engaging students in critical media scholarship. By encouraging students to critically analyze those media they already interact with for pleasure, and by editing the articles, Gail Dines and Jean Humez are able to make sophisticated concepts and theories accessible and interesting to undergraduate students.

Keys, keys, keys. He would trust me with the keys to his office, although I was only a baby; and the keys to his safes, where he kept the jewels I should wear, he promised me, when we returned to Paris. Such jewels! Why, I would be able to change my earrings and necklaces three times a day, just as the Empress Josephine used to change her underwear. ... One single key remained unaccounted for on the ring and he hesitated over it; for a moment, I thought he was going to unfasten it from its brothers, slip it back into its pockets and take it away with him. "What is that key?" I demanded, for his chaffing had made me bold. "The key to your heart? Give it me!" ... "Ah, no," he said. "Not the key to my heart. Rather, the key to my enfer." ... "Every man must have one secret, even if only one, from his wife," he said. "Promise me this, my whey-faced piano player; promise me you'll use all the keys on the ring except the last little one I showed you. Play with anything you find, jewels, silver plate; make toy boats of my share certificates, if it pleases you ... All is yours, everywhere is open to you - except the lock that this single key fits".

Project 5 Megan Wyly For part 5a of the soft sculpture project, I chose to recreate a can of soda. For part 5b, I chose to market my soft sculpture can toward couples trying to conceive a child in the year 2030. My idea was that since a man contains the chromosome which determines the sex of the embryo (‘X’ for female, or ‘Y’ for male)- a man can drink either ‘X’ or ‘Y’ soda to create the development of only ‘X’ or ‘Y’ sperm, which allows the couple to predetermine the sex of their children. The package I chose to market my product needed to ‘feel’ like medical packaging. It needed to be clean and white and needed to give the spectator a sense of trust, while catching their eye as to compete with the hundreds of other products on the pharmacy shelf. I found the packaging style on under the link for health & beauty. It was designed by a student from Israel named Adar Peled. Whether morally correct or not, I believe being able to choose your baby’s gender is one of the avenues our society of control-freaks is working toward which could change the world. I thought it would be an interesting project reminiscent of Fahrenheit 451 or Minority Report.

Gender (Polity Short Introductions)
How can we understand gender in the contemporary world? What differences now exist between women and men? How are masculinities and femininities made? And what is the impact of globalization on gender issues?
Raewyn Connell, one of the world's leading scholars in the field, answers these questions and more. In this book she provides a readable introduction to modern gender studies, covering empirical research from all parts of the world in addition to theory and politics. As well as introducing the field, Gender provides a powerful contemporary framework for gender analysis with a distinctive global awareness. Highlighting the multi-dimensional character of gender relations, Connell shows how to link personal life with large-scale organizational structures and how gender politics changes its form in changing situations.
The second edition of this influential and accessible book brings the review of research up to date and includes new discussions of gender theory in the global periphery, the legacy of colonialism, the intersection of structures, the impact of deconstructionist theory and politics, and understanding transsexual and transgender lives.
Gender is engaged scholarship that moves from personal experience to global problems and offers a unique perspective on gender issues today.
