The intelligent White-necked Ravens know where climbers have lunch and wait for food
The White-necked Raven, Corvus albicollis, is somewhat smaller (50-54 cm in length) than the Common Raven or indeed its nearest relative, the Thick-billed Rave. It occurs in eastern and southern Africa in open, mountainous country. It is quite commonly found in small towns and villages as long as there are mountains or hills for roosting and nesting relatively near by. Most of this birds food is obtained from the ground, but it will take food from trees also. It has been seen to drop tortoises from a height onto hard ground, preferably onto rocks, and then swoop down to eat it, or even pick it up again if not sufficiently broken. White-necked Ravens will also readily take carrion from road kills. Fruit, grain, insects, small reptiles, peanuts and human food are also readily taken and if not persecuted, will forage in back yards and gardens quite openly. Crows and ravens often score very highly on intelligence tests. Certain species top the avian IQ scale. Wild hooded crows in Israel have learned to use bread crumbs for bait-fishing. Crows will engage in a kind of mid-air jousting, or air-"chicken" to establish pecking order. One species, the New Caledonian Crow, has also been intensively studied recently because of its ability to manufacture and use its own tools in the day-to-day search for food. These tools include 'knives' cut from stiff leaves and stiff stalks of grass. Another skill involves dropping tough nuts into a heavy trafficked street and waiting for a car to crush them open, and then waiting at pedestrian lights with other pedestrians in order to retrieve the nuts. On October 5, 2007, researchers from the University of Oxford, England presented data acquired by mounting tiny video cameras on the tails of New Caledonian Crows. It turned out that they use a larger variety of tools than previously known, plucking, smoothing and bending twigs and grass stems to procure a variety of foodstuffs. Crows in Queensland, Australia have learned how to eat the toxic cane toad by flipping the cane toad on its back and violently stabbing the throat where the skin is thinner, allowing the crow to access the non-toxic innards; their long beaks ensure that all of the innards can be removed. Flip Flop Roadkill This is great..... by Elspeth Murray...... Flip Flotsam This is the beach where the flip flops come at the end of their flip flop trip. And where does a flip flop trip begin? the floor of a flip flop factory; on the shelf of a flip flop shop; or the foot of a flip flop fan? And what snaps the strap of each flip flop that finds its flip flop fate? a flip too far; a flop too fast; or a slip that flapped it back? And what does the sea say when she sees another flip flop fall? Oh, flip flop and flotsam fair and foul, I'll freely float you all!"? OR ... Do the waters, wavey and wide curse each clutch of clutter that comes on each tide and storm up the sand with curses that worsen at each beach-tripping strap-snapping flip-flopping person?
