“Cross-Cultural Analysis of Students with Exceptional Talent in Mathematical Problem Solving,” Notices of the American Mathematical Society, November, 2008.  The connection, if any, between gender (or other demographic factors) and mathematical skills has been much discussed in the popular and scientific press. In this study, the authors investigate ultra-high-level mathematical ability by looking at top tier mathematics competitions and find that girls and boys do equally well.
