Steve Prefontaine in Nike Gear running with "Olympic Trials" lettered below the Nike t-shirt logo, July 1972 Olympic Trials Eugene, Oregon
Pre in fledgling Nike Gear warming up at the July 1972 US Olympic Track and Field Time Trials at Hayward Field, Eugene, Oregon. He is wearing an "Olympic Trials" lettered t-shirt with the newly designed Nike emblem with the 'Swoosh' logo. This is the first public manifestation of the Nike brand worn by a top athlete at an athletic event. Despite this, Pre wore his tried and true Adidas when he competed in the 5000m heat and final of the trials--one doesn't change the formula at the Olympic Trials! Pre did not wear Nikes in competition until after the start of the 1973 outdoor track season with the University of Oregon. The Spring of 1973 Pre entered into employment with BRS/Nike in order to earn income so he could retain his amateur status while training for the 1976 Olympics. He would lose his Oregon athletic scholarship when he graduated in 1973, and he was virtually penniless. He turned down the largest offer ever made to a track athlete to turn pro so he could compete in the 76 Olympics, so the BRS/Nike income was vitally important to his being able to remain an amateur.
