Salt Creek
Salt Creek
Mike P., Whittier, CA writes........ i was just a little tike, no more that 7 years old. the first time i cautiously made my way down the hill. it seemed like an endless mountain. when i finally made it to the sand, i remember thinking.."this has to be what heaven looks like" it was 7am, Dawn Patrol with my uncles. i wasn't even a Grommet yet, i could swim, but my uncles played it safe, and told me to stay on the beach. there was still some low lying fog, that hid the height of the cliffs and any signs of the hotel that stood on top. i had never seen such a beach. the sand was soft and fine and felt like it was somehow cushioned. there wasn't a massive headwind blowing onshore. there were no bottles or cans strewn about. and the water..oh the water! crystal clear and baby blue. things i thought were only on TV in places like Hawaii, or where ever the Love Boat was going that week. simply amazing. i sat there on the beach, watching my uncles Body Boarding the surf. it looked like such amazing fun! i loved how the waves would run off the jetty, and turn blue as they threw into a curl on their way to the beach. i sat there for what seemed like hours just taking it all in. until finally, i fell asleep on top of my uncles piled dry clothes. when i woke up, i was surrounded by lots of people, setting up for their day at the beach.. my uncles were walking toward me, looking tired and weary. they packed it up and we made our slow ascent up the hill of death. on the way home, we stopped at Taco Loco for some great food. it was there that i told my uncles the next time they went back to Salt Creek i wanted to ride with them. and so began my surf education. it took a year of touring all the different breaks, to hone my skills. Huntington Cliffs, 42nd street, Sleepy Hollow, 1000 steps, Aliso Creek, and then finally...Salt Creek. i felt like i had made it to the major leagues. i paddled out, lined up, and charged for my first wave. the ride was sweet until the wave jacked up and rolled me into the washing machine.. i was gasping, and yet felt like i had certainly grown up a bit. years and years later, im on a board, with my son struggling to keep up next to me. doing my best to try and explain the finer points of wave-riding to my boy. i set him up, and watched him paddle into his first crystal blue guessed it, the boy got trashed, and i could not have been prouder. i have too many memories of exploits at Salt Creek to share here. Ice-Blocking the grass hill, sneaking into the Ritz, harassing Hard-Board surfers.. to simply put it- I Love Salt Creek!!................. I've only been there 4X but so do I. This image was taken from the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, where my my wife and I stayed thanks to my daughter's "friends and family discount" while she was working at the Ritz in NY. It is a magical place.
