On January 11, 1968, Avec Souci was organized as a Junior Women's Club by members of L'Heure d'Amitie Federated Club of Lafayette, Louisiana with Mrs. W.D. Frazell, Mrs. J.L. Pritchett and Mrs. George Macaulay acting as advisors. Originally there were twelve charter members with a potential membership of thirty. The club's first president was Mrs. Wiley Stein (1968-1969). The name, Avec Souci, meaning "with care," refers to the club's civic responsibility just as the motto, "Together We Care," encourages members to work cooperatively toward community improvement. The club flower is the camellia, so abundant in South Louisiana. The colors are green and pink. In 1988, Avec Souci was honored by the Acadiana Volunteer Activists as one of the three finalist outstanding volunteer organizations. These sixth annual award presentations were in recognition of outstanding volunteer community service in health, education, civic beautification, preservation and the arts. By 1993, the club's twenty-fifth anniversary, more than $45,000 had been distributed throughout the community done with an average yearly membership of only twenty-five ladies. |
