Mhire Garden

Herman Mhire
1500 Myrtle Place Boulevard, Lafayette, LA  70506

Two months after purchasing his home in 1991, a 1940 Modernist house in Lafayette's Oaklawn Subdivision, Herman Mhire began placing his unique stamp on the historic property. His first order of business was the creation of a garden, since the house had a green lawn, but little substantial landscaping. Mhire embarked upon a do-it-yourself course of removing portions of the existing lawn and replacing it with bedding plants and
crepe myrtles.

After building a studio adjacent to his home in 1997, he found inspiration for a new garden plan in his own drawings that utilized the image of an oval. His design consisted of a central open space surrounded by trees and beds, and he hired Greg Brandl of Brandl Landscaping to bring his plan to fruition.

Herman Mhire's perennial garden now includes Japanese black pines, Japanese maples, azaleas, camellias, Louisiana iris, amaryllis, calla lilies, gingers, ligularia, colocasias, hydrangeas, sweet olive, sago palms, Chinese Goddess bamboo, an automatic watering system and LED lighting.

Admission to all five gardens is $15 in advance or $20 at the homes. Tickets can be purchased  from any Avec Souci member, Albertsons on Johnston Street, All Seasons Nursery and Landscape on Johnston St, Champagne's Market in the Oil Center, The Garden Center on Pinhook, and Greenscapes Nursery on Settlers Trace.
