Iron Hill Brewmasters
Iron Hill Brewmasters
As Kate, Randy, and I were walking past Iron Hill to get some lunch, I saw a couple of kegs with rubber, uh... well, I guess, rubber bungs in them, and hoses leading out, with the other end submerged in a plastic pail. It looked a little bit like the setup we used to make jug wine in college (and in prison, of course.) Just then, a fellow walked by holding a pair of long green rubber gloves, and I asked him if he was making beer, and he said "Yes! This one is with a pretty weird, funky yeast, so we're trying a small batch. It has... farmyard notes." He gestured to the enormous silver tanks filling up the rest of the room. "We don't want to try making THAT much with this yeast." It turns out that I was talking to Jean, one of the full-time brewmasters at Iron Hill. We asked if he would show us the inside, and he was happy to -- it was a bit like a cross between a swimming-pool heater room, a chemical laboratory, and a production bakery inside. We got to see the pressure casks for holding yeast, the great big filters (pictured), the various banjo valves for removing bear and drawing off yeast starter, and the great big enormous copper kettles where the beer (wort? tun?) is cooked until it's ready to ferment. I asked about the big smokestack coming off the copper kettles -- did that make the funky smells that we sometimes smell at the corner of Gay and High? Yes! And he pointed out that a lot of people get concerned because "it smells so nasty" -- but actually that's a good thing, because what you're smelling is what's LEAVING the beer. I had never really given too much thought to the great big kettles in Iron Hill's window, but now I'm totally motivated to go DRINK SOME BEER!

May 2005 Dude, Where’s My Pool? In-ground swimming pool stolen from Norwegian family When Arild Nicolaysen closed his summer cabin in preparation for the cold Norwegian winter late last November, he might have been concerned about freezing pipes or animal damage. He probably wasn’t worried his in-ground swimming pool would be dug up and stolen. But when he and his family recently returned to the mountain cabin this spring, indeed the 20-year-old swimming pool was gone, with nothing but a gaping hole in its place. The thieves even took all of the 16-foot-wide pool’s equipment. “This can’t be, we thought,” Nicolaysen told state radio network NRK and the Kansas City Star. “We didn’t think it was possible.” The local of Hobol (southeast of Oslo), Widar Gudim, calls the theft “undeniably a special case,” but says he fears changing weather conditions might have damaged any clues left by the thieves. “It must have been a terrible job to disassemble such a big pool,” Brit Nicolaysen, who owns the cabin with her husband, told Kansas City Star. “There is a steel lining all the way around, plus there is a plastic liner and then there was a skimming system, a filter system and a lot of big hoses and pipes. They must have had a whole lot of time.”
