Brandt, Bill - The English at Home, 1936 p55 fl
As always, images of the poor, challenged and disadvantaged are those that create an emotional response. As a Londoner whose parents and grandparents were there in the 1930s where all these pictures were taken (my grandfather was a London cabbie), I identify strongly with the place and time. This image is one of the strongest in the book, and features on the back cover. Only the baby is looking at the camera, giving the impression less of a portrait than how life is normally. The drabness, shabby clothes and cramped space give the message of poverty, but it is the clasped hands and look of forlorn resignation on the face of the young woman on the left that I find affecting. Interestingly the captions in the book are in English and French, but the translations often do not match – this one says “The Home” in English, but the French says “Family of a Worker”.
