FIAT C40 Anno costruzione Construction years 1959 - 1962 Motore Motor 213 Cilindrata displacement cc 4678 Potenza Power 90 Cv Sul finire degli anni Cinquanta la Fiat produceva una vasta gamma di veicoli commerciali: il 600 T, il 1100 T, il 615 ed una serie completa di veicoli industriali pesanti, il 642, il 671, il 682 mentre di li a poco sarebbe iniziata la produzione del 690, ma non aveva a listino un camion di classe media . Fino ad allora per i camion di classe media la Fiat puntava sulla produzione OM , in effetti l’azienda bresciana, all’epoca gia controllata dal gruppo torinese aveva a listino modelli che coprivano ogni fascia di peso complessivo da quattro a tredici tonnellate. Il progetto del C40, C50 nasce per la particolare esigenza di concorrere alla gara per la fornitura di circa cinquemila veicoli da fornire alle truppe militari NATO, iniziativa portata avanti in primis dalla casa madre per non gravare sulle gia congestionate linee di montaggio dello stabilimento di Brescia dove venivano assemblati gli OM. Nel 1958 il progetto ed i primi prototipi sono pronti, mentre la NATO invalida la gara, non intendendo procedere all’acquisto, ma dal canto loro i vertici dell’azienda torinese credendo nella bonta del progetto ne avviano la produzione in serie. Nel 1959 vengono immatricolati i primi esemplari di Fiat C40 , autocarro leggero con quaranta quintali di portata sul telaio, pochi mesi piu tardi viene presentato il C50, veicolo praticamente identico ma con sospensioni rinforzate, pneumatici piu grandi e cinquanta quintali di portata sul telaio. Strutturalmente contro tendenza il piccolo Fiat, e stato progettato secondo linee guida imposte dalle specifiche militari, tra queste la piu anticonformista e la cabina arretrata. A Torino, fin da prima della guerra si producevano autocarri con cabina avanzata, soluzione che portava numerosi vantaggi in termini di pesi e misure ed anche se penalizzava il confort di marcia, (il motore non e piu fuori dall’abitacolo ma si trova tra il posto di guida ed il sedile del passeggero) fu fin da dall’inizio pienamente gradita dai clienti italiani. Il punto di forza del piccolo Fiat si rivelo il motore, un compatto sei cilindri da 4,7 litri capace di erogare novanta cavalli, capostipite di una gamma di motori modulari la cui produzione nelle varie serie si e protratta fino ai giorni nostri, sospesa solo con l’avvento dei nuovi motori gestiti elettronicamente. Registered in 1959 are the first models of Fiat C40, light truck with forty tons of capacity on the frame, a few months later presents the C50, but virtually the same vehicle with reinforced suspension, larger tires and fifty tons of capacity on the frame. Structurally trend against the little Fiat was designed according to guidelines imposed by military specifications, among them the most unconventional is the walk back. In Turin, since before the war produced trucks with cab advanced solution which brings numerous advantages in terms of weights and measures and even penalized the ride comfort, (the engine is no longer out of the cockpit but is between driver's seat and passenger seat) was from the beginning fully appreciated by Italian customers. The strength of the small Fiat turned the engine, a compact 4.7-liter six-cylinder engine capable of delivering ninety horses, forerunner of a range of modular engines in the various series whose production has continued to this day, suspended only with the advent of the new engines managed electronically. No motor show took place in 1946 or 1947, and the 1948 event, the 33rd Exhibition, was that which had been due to take place late in 1939. The Motor Show and Commercial Vehicle Exhibition were re-introduced in October and November 1948. 1948 combined car and commercial show, the first one after the war, held at. Earls Court.
