don gaetano
don gaetano
my dad spoke highly of don gaetano many times before. in his first visit to naples 15 years ago was when he first met this master gantier. years ago, right after the great war, the young gaetano was struggling in naples after the whole charade the world had to go through. but he persevered and he did the only thing he had learned as a young man, and that was to make fine leather gloves. he and his wife would do everything themselves. cutting, trimming, sewing and stitching... it was a home operation. he would then send the gloves up to milan and florence where it was colder (compared the the seaside city of napoli), and that was pretty much history after that. after all the stories my father had told me about him, i was very happy to have been able to meet him in my trip. and i was greeted with a firm handshake, and a formal beso, as if straight out of a mafia movie. but he was no gangster (or thats what i think hahaha). as my father and his son talked about some work related topics, don gaetano invited me to join him to see the floor. he doesnt speak english at all, his italian is just okay, but his language was really neapolitan. i told him in the little italian that i knew that i was a leather cutter or coupier, and he wanted to see how i would do. so he handed me some tools of our trade: fine scissors, a staubing knife and a hide of leather to cut. it was natural for me by then, so i layed oud the hide and imagined the patterns i were to cut, and i then began to stretch the hides. but not even 20 seconds into what i thought was "natural" to me was i interrupted with a smile and a hand on my shoulder, he extends his finger and signals that i was doing it all wrong. i was quite embarassed, but laughed and thought to myself "damn, so much for impressing him." he takes it and starts working on the hide with such strength and grace. it might not mean anything to anyone who is outside the circle of artisans such as coupiers, but it was amazing. i watched and he instructed me, with the right technique, the proper amount of strength, the correct type of cutting and the supple touch on such precious materials. it was really a pleasure learning from a master. up to this day, don gaetano still works without fail. he locks himself in what his "regno" and sort every piece of leather that they produce. that is what you call dedication. as with any goodbye, it was heartbreaking for me. it was the first time i met a master of a dying trade, but more than that he was a kind and a real gentleman that is even far more difficult to find in this day and age. p.s. as for that yellow thing, i dont know what the shit it is. it appeared in all my 120s and ruined at least 80% of my good shots, dammit. im sending my baby to the doctor.

IWC Big Ingenieur Chronograph Platinum IW378403
IWC Big Ingenieur Chronograph Platinum Following the successful launch of the Big Ingenieur, it was only a matter of time before this coveted giant of a watch became available with an IWC-manufactured chronograph. For the first time in this watch family, it also came with the analogue display developed by IWC for long recorded times: stopped minutes and hours can be read off just like the time of day and require no addition. Short stop times of under a minute are timed by the central stopwatch hand. Used in combination with the tachymeter scale, this provides the speed at which a reference distance of, say 1,000 metres, has been completed. Thanks to the flyback function, pushing the reset button returns the stopwatch hand to zero and immediately starts a new timing sequence. For anyone who appreciates complex mechanics, the sapphire-glass back provides a view of the 89360 calibre at work. It is powered by IWC’s highly efficient double-pawl winding, which builds up a power reserve of 68 hours in no time.
