What's the fun of a disaster if you can't report on it? This little power source will allow me to post pictures to flickr and updates to Facebook. It should last a good 3 hours or so or more given that the laptop and modem only use 1 watt of power. I'm posting with it as we speak. I bought the power source from Target some 15 years ago when I was first getting into this stuff. I got a new 8 amp battery for it recently. It's harder to find simple external power sources now. Most are much bigger and come with an inverter so are much more expensive. People dump them when the battery goes dead so probably can be scrounged. Easier than trying to build one. I'm not very good with a volt meter and all, thus the little plug-in car battery tester is key. I can charge up the battery with my 15 watt solar panel. The key is to have a car charger for the laptop because it sucks up much less power than if I used my inverter. I have car chargers for my phone, CD player and battery chargers too. And yes I do have my 7 gallons per person of water plus field grade Berkey water filter in case we have to tap into water catchment system. Along with my composting porta potty, 12 volt swamp cooler, numerous lanterns and human powered tools, I have the beginnings of an off grid living set-up. I might try that evaporative refridgeration in a pot next, as seen in Low Impact Man. Funny that he didn't think he had to do without indoor plumbing, but can't blame him since he lived in an apartment in Manhattan and his wife would never have gone for it. (It was her mainstream perspective that made the movie so much deeper and accessible for non-off-grid geeks.) He, too, had a one panel solar to battery hook-up for blogging.Original filtering system
The original filtering system used 2 needlepoint hoops placed one top of one another. The top hoop held a nylon mesh with a 200 micrometer opening while the one below it held a 28 micrometer opening nylon mesh. While the water flowed quickly through the 200 micrometer mesh, it backed up and flowed over the hoop holding the 28 micrometer mesh. To avoid water overflow, we were forced to alter the rate we passed our sample over the mesh to an unacceptably slow speed. Filtering samples took up to 1 hour with this system. This 2-mesh size array system was employed because previous researchers found cercariae ID easier when large (100-200 micrometer) and small (50-100) cercariae were separated. I don' t think we'll have enough cercariae in our samples for this to be a problem, so I'm leaning towards only filtering with the 25 micrometer mesh.
