fish pond with barrel garden for filter
bio-filtered pond This was an experiment a couple of years ago, It's been working beautifully ever since. The barrel is filled with gravel of various sizes in layers separated by mesh with a layer of sand and a small amount of organic matter on top. Some plants are planted straight into the sand, some are in pots with potting mix inserted into the sand. Water is pumped from the bottom left (in pic) of the pond to the middle top of the barrel. The gravel presents a large surface area for the bacteria to work on and the plants happily suck up the nitrates. The water running back out of the barrel into the pond makes a nice sound and aerates the water. The plants are a mix of ferns, gingers, palms and other bog plants. They are very happy and have grown enormously since the photo was taken. I believe that it would happily filter a much larger pond and hope to one day give it one.
Koi pond build from scratch. Skimmers, filters, fountain and water fall all home made. I was trying to capture the Koi but the sky reflection put a stop to that. My next purchase is a circular polarizer.
