This is a photograph showing an interview project I am working on. Girl’s Inc. in Richmond received a grant from the Wayne County Foundation to purchase two sets of recording equipment to document their history, as they are celebrating their fortieth anniversary, and one set is ‘hosted’ at Morrisson-Reeves Library for members of the community to use. Being from Berkeley in almost every way, having been beaten by police protesting the Viet Nam war, raised by a U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander who was a World War Two veteran, and now living in an area that has an overwhelming number of Military Veterans as well as being a center for Quakers in America, I hope to document life in America from a balanced perspective during these ‘interesting times’. I love making photographs of people and as Sydney Greenstreet says in “Maltese Falcon” am “the kind of a man who likes to talk to the kind of man who likes to talk”. Knowing my actual links to Veterans is not rooted in direct experience, I have asked Sgt. Major Mark Morris to help me conduct interviews with area men and women who have served in the military, and on Thursdays we meet at Morrisson-Reeves Library and I try to keep quiet while Mark brings up details of a Vet’s service. I am not disciplined enough to keep completely out of the way though, and as we spoke to Mr. Lotich I asked him what he did for fun in Indiana. He had received flight training in the Air Force in 1944 when he graduated from high school, and he said that he had a friend who had a Piper Cub, and they used to dive over the area. One day they saw a man working on the roof of his barn and as they buzzed close to him he threw his hammer at the plane. A few days later when they saw him he promised he wouldn’t miss the next time.11. Brian diving with Turtles
