Applying for a Historic Texas Cemetery Designation or Cemetery Marker
can be a very rewarding and fulfilling experience,
especially if it is in recognition of one’s own ancestral family.
Per the Texas Historical Commission: "A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations." The following link explains the process in detail and provides application forms. Historic Texas Cemetery Designation
An applicant must research the history of the cemetery, fill out the Request for Designation, and provide photographs and a map of the cemetery. The application fee is $25.00, and must be made out to the Texas Historical Commission. Once a cemetery has been historically designated, it may be eligible to receive an Official Texas Historical Marker. Marker applications are accepted from September 1st to November 15th of any given year, and the processing fee of $100.00 is non-refundable. Markers are paid for by a marker sponsor (individual or organization) and must be placed at the cemetery location.
