Book of STOKAN

The Stokan Family originates from the Orkney Isles. I welcome your involvement in the site so our ancestors live on and we can become better people by understanding our unique heritage. I would like to thank all contributors who have so graciously shared their branches of the tree.

My STOKAN Families

Samuel STOCKAN(STOKAN), a weaver  was married to Jannet SPENCE on the 23rd December 1794 in Birsay, Sandwick, Orkney Islands, Scotland.

Samuel and Janett’s children were:

1.1. Katrine STOCKAN was christened on the 1 February 1795 in Sandwick.

1.2. Samuel STOCKAN, a farmer was christened on the 29th March 1796 in Birsay, Orkney Is. In 1851 he was a 57 year old farmer with 21 acres, living with his wife at Scarating, Sandwick, Orkney Isles. He married Betty HEDDELL on the 4th May 1816 in Sandwick. Betty was born about 1784 in Kirkwall, Orkney Isles. She was also known as Elizabeth.

His second marriage was to Sibella IRVINE on the 23rd December 1858 in Sandwick. Sibella was born about 1803. Sibella died on the 20th February 1877 in Scarating at 74. They had no known children.

Samuel died in July 1889 and was buried in Stromness Kirkyard, Orkney Isles. The informant on his death certificate was his daughter Margaret LINKLATER and his cause of death is not listed as no medical attendant was present.

    Only one known child of Samuel and Betty is:

    1.2.1. Margaret Graham Watt STOCKAN (1817-1905) married William LINKLATER on the 14th February 1839 at Sandwick. William was born on the 31st  January 1813 in Kirbister, Stromness Orkney Isles, Scotland and he died on the 17 March 1882 at Arion, Stromness aged 69. He was a a farmer and tailor.   Margaret died at 6.30 am on the 18th August 1905 at Asia Cottage, Kirkbuster, Orkney Isles. She had a few problems that contributed to her death such as  a senile heart for  a few years, an infarction of the  right lung with congestion of both lungs  for one year and urethritis for one month. Her Son in Law,  William McEWAN was the informant at her death.

     William and Margaret’s children were: William LINKLATER was born in 1840 at Stromness. In 1851 he was a scholar at Scarating, Sandwick. He died on the 25th July 1863 at the Hudson Bay Company, Vancouver Island, Canada aged 23. David LINKLATER was born about 1842.  He died on 11th June 1893 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, aged 51. Jacob LINKLATER was born in 1846.  He died on 9th October 1898 in near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.  He was a F C Minister. Eliza LINKLATER was born about August 1851. She died on the 12th December 1853. She was buried in 1853 in Stromness Cemetery, aged 2years 8 months. Eliza LINKLATER was born on the 11th January 1855 in Kirbuster, Stromness.  She was married to William BURLISON in 1887 in Melbourne. She died in 1937 in Melbourne, Australia. Eliza's son, Roy BURLISON (1894-1967) married Dorothy STRATFORD(1897-1993).

1.3. William STOCKAN (STOKAN) was christened on the 13th April 1800 in Birsay. He was married to Christian LOUTTIT on the 20 October 1827 in Stromness, Orkney Islands by Rev Charles CLOUSTON. He was a Shoemaker. In !841 they were living at Gray's Biggins, Stromness.William died in 1846. His wife was born about 1796 to George LOUTTIT and Marjory ROBERTSON. She was christened on the 1 January 1797 in Stromness. Christian was a Strawplaiter in 1821 at Stromness. She was a widow and a Shoe Binder in 1851 and resided at Snody's Close off Main Street, Stromness. She died on the 17 September 1873 in Orkney. She was also known as Christina.

        William and Christian’s children were:

        1.3.1. Catherine STOKAN was born on the 15th January 1828 in Stromness and she married William LEASK on the 16 th November 1854.

        1.3.2. William Stobes STOKAN was born on the 11th July 1832 in Strumlass, Stromness a fishing village. He was christened on the 20th July 1832 in Stromness. He was named after the local vicar, William STOBBS. He married Mary SCARTH on the 3rd June 1851 in Archorton, Stromness. Mary was born on the 3rd May 1825 in Evie & Rendell, Orkney Islands. She was the daughter of James SCARTH & Lydia IRVINE. Mary died in 1908 in Elsternwick, Victoria, Australia at 83 years old and was buried in Brighton General Cemetery in the Presbyterian Section.

He sailed from Stromwick and left Plymouth on the 13th October 1858 which then arrived on the 4th February 1859 at Brisbane shortly before the separation of Queensland and New South Wales on the "British Empire" a 642 ton 3m barque as an ordinary assisted immigrant aged 26 and he was formerly employed as a labourer. His religious background was Presbyterian and he could read & write. His wife and son accompanied him. This may not have been a pleasant trip for Mary as she was pregnant. There were 236 emigrants on board including children and the trip took 113 days. The Captain was Master HAINES, a shipboard diary of the passage exists at the Society of Geneaologists, Sydney which was published in "Australian Family Tree Connections", October, 2000. Definitely not the most pleasant voyage as they passed through 2 hurricanes and spent a cold Christmas Day with double rations and playing games.

He was a Drayman in 1885/86 in Churchill, Ipswich, Queensland and was still at Churchill in 1894. He died on 30th October 1902 at Moffatt Street, Ipswich aged 70 years. He was buried in the Congregational Section of Ipswich Cemetery on the 31st October 1902. William's cause of death at 70 was Hypertrophy and Dilation of the Heart, Dropsy and Cardiac Failure which he had suffered for a year. He was also known as William Stubbs STOKAN.

William and Mary’s Children were:

   William STOKAN was born on the 5th August 1857. He immigrated from Stromwick and arrived on the 4th February 1859 at Brisbane, QLD, Australia aboard the "British Empire" with his parents aged 19 months. He was married to his cousin Grace MOODIE in 1882 in Victoria, Australia. Grace MOODIE was born in 1858 at Duneed, VIC. She died on the 11th May 1931 in Toowoomba, QLD and she was buried on the 12th May 1931 in Toowoomba Cemetery. William was occupied as a fireman in 1885/86 in Churchill, Ipswich, QLD. He resided in 1894 at Short Street, Ipswich. Later he moved to Delacey St, Toowoomba. He died on the 20th September 1923 in Toowoomba and was buried on the  21st September 1923 in Toowoomba Cemetery.

William and Grace’s children were:

 Lydia STOKAN was born on Tuesday 29th April 1859 in Ipswich. She died on Sunday 9th April 1863 in QLD. James STOCKAND (STOKAN) was born on the 15th December 1861 in Ipswich, QLD, Australia. He was married to Jessie Victoria GLASS in 1890 in Victoria, Australia.  Jessie was born in 1863 in South Melbourne, VIC. She died in 1909 in Armadale, VIC. and was buried on the 24 December 1909 in St Kilda Cemetery, VIC., aged 46. James died in 1899 in Prahran, Melbourne, VIC, aged 37. He was buried on the 4 February 1899 in St Kilda Cemetery.

                James and Jessie’s children were:

       Thomas Clouston STOKAN was born in 1891 in South Melbourne, Victoria. He was killed in World War 1 aged 24. He was a Sergeant 1099 14th Bn., Australian Infantry, A.I.F who died on Friday the 27th August 1915 and he is memorialised at the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey.

       Eva STOKAN was born in 1894 in Port Melbourne, Victoria. She died at Malvern, Victoria and was buried on the 31st July 1958 in St Kilda Cemetery. She was also known as Edith.

       Rose STOKAN.

       Mary Scarth STOKAN. Lydia Ann STOKAN married Fred WOOD. John STOKAN was born on the 13th July 1867 in Ipswich, QLD, Australia. He married Annie Donald SEATON who was born in Edinburgh in 1893 at Victoria, Australia. His wife died in 1956. She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He died in 1935 at Ryde, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

            John and Annie's child was:

        Alexander James STOKAN.

    1.3.3. Samuel  STOCKAN was born the 10th December 1833 in Stromness, Orkney Islands. He was a Joiner, Bellman, Town Crier. He appeared on the census in 1891 in Stromness aged 55. He bought his lair on the 12th August 1904. He died on the 20 June 1906 in Orkney. He was married to Jessie MOAR on the 10th March 1864 in Stromness. Jessie was born in 1845. On the census in 1891 she was living in Stromness, aged 48. She died on the 23th February 1905 in Stromness.

    Samuel and Jessie’s children were: Jessie Vincent STOCKAN was born on the 10th May 1864 in Stromness. Jane Malcolm STOCKAN was born on the 10th August 1866 in Stromness. Samuel Alexander STOCKAN was born on the 12th August 1872 in Stromness. He appeared on the census in 1891 in Stromness aged 18. He married Mary MUIR.

    1.3.4. Margaret G W STOCKAN was born on the 26th June 1838 in Stromness, Orkney Isand she married John BROWN on the 30th May 1861 in South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands Witnesses to the marriage were George PARK and James BANKS. She died on the 21st February 1919 at South Ronaldsay. James was the son of John BROWN (b. 1811) and Barbara ROSS.

        James and Margaret’s children were: George William BROWN (1862) Christina BROWN (28 January 1863-2 May 1925) married Peter Miller ROUSAY (10 November 1862- 4 Feb 1938). They emigrated to the USA and were residents of Medford, Middlesex, Massachusetts and raised 6 children. John BROWN (1865) Peter BROWN (1866-1866) Catherine BROWN (1868) Robert BROWN (1868) Helen Sarah McGuffie BROWN (1870-1870) Helen Sarah McGuffie BROWN (1872) married William James WOODWARD on the 11 November 1908 in London. James Swanson BROWN (1874- 1897) Barbara Elizabeth BROWN (1876) Margaret Jean BROWN (1878)

1.3. 4. Mary STOCKAN was christened on the 5th January 1806 in Birsay.

1.3.5. Kethrine STOCKAN was christened on the 4th June 1813 in Birsay.
