It is common for courts and government agencies to mandate participation in drug and alcohol addiction recovery programs—as part of the criminal justice system or in the regulation of professions such as law and medicine. Serious constitutional issues arise when persons are required to participate in recovery programs that are based on religion. Mr. Codell is a constitutional attorney who has advised persons who have been forced to participate in religious recovery programs in which they did not believe. Join us to hear his legal analysis of this issue.

Mr. Codell received his bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Harvard College, and his J.D. degree magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was a Supreme Court Editor of the Harvard Law Review. Mr. Codell served as a law clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court of the United States. He also has served as Constitutional Litigation Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights and as Visiting Legal Director of the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.

Mr. Codell has provided pro bono representation to individuals and organizations in numerous cases that have resulted in historic rulings advancing civil rights, including many of the recent cases involving marriage equality. He has been honored for his pro bono work by numerous organizations, and is a frequent speaker about constitutional issues at universities and continuing legal education events.
