Tuesday, June 4

10:30 A.M. Fred Blanco’s (Cesar Chavez) workshop "El Teatro Campesino: A Chicano Theatre Movement" is an overview of the Chicano theatre company, El Teatro Campesino, and its origins in the United Farm Workers Union, as well as, its evolution throughout the years.  He explains how theatre was used in the fields as an educational tool and promoted activism for Cesar Chavez and the Farm Labor Movement.

This is in the center lobby of Defiance High School, 1755 Palmer Dr., Defiance.

 

2:00 P.M. James Armstead (Benjamin O. Davis Jr.) will discuss America's emergence as a World Power from 1940 - 1970.  The US entered WWII as the 19th rated world military power and emerged 4 years later as the foremost global super power with the largest naval and air forces in the world.  He will also touch on the ensuing East-West tensions which became the Cold War. 

This workshop is at the VFW Post 3360, 201 Clinton St., Defiance.

Wednesday, June 5

10:30 A.M. Karen Vuranch plays Julia Child and, no surprise, her workshops will center around food, family and the important role food plays in each!  Participants are encouraged to share their own food traditions, ethnic influences and ideas of food in their community.  Bring a recipe to share too!  

This workshop is in the Fellowship Hall at the north end of St. John's UCC, 950 Webster St., Defiance.

 

2:00 P.M. Fred Blanco (Cesar Chavez) talks on Zoot Suit Riots which took place in 1943 in LA where white servicemen attacked Mexican-American "zooters" and literally tore the clothes off their backs. This talk revisits the riots, and the events that led to them.  

This workshop is held at Defiance College's Pilgrim Library, 201 College Pl., Defiance.

Thursday, June 6

10:30 A.M. Susan Marie Frontczak (Erma Bombeck) brings us a children’s program titled "Legendary Children's Stories from the Mid-20th Century - Storytelling Program". Stories include Dr. Seuss, Robert McCloskey, and others.

2:00 P.M. Dr. J. Holmes Armstead (Benjamin O. Davis Jr.) will present a children's program "Fundamental of Flight" which examines the basic physics of flight and gives practical demonstrations of the forces exerted on airplanes during flight and much more.

Friday, June 7

10:30 A.M. Jeremy Meier* plays Robert F Kennedy in his workshop "To Make Gentle the Life of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy"; this is a children's program catering to kids age 10 - 18.  He will discuss the concepts of acceptance, equality and peace and evaluate how they can be used in life.  

This workshop is at the Johnson Memorial Library, 116 W High St., Hicksville.

 

2:00 P.M.  Karen Vuranch (Julia Child) talks about "Food Fads in America: From Feasting and Fasting, Frozen to Fabulous" in this humorous workshop. Come prepared for laughs!

Saturday, June 8

10:30 A.M. Jeremy Meier* (Robert F. Kennedy) talks about the "Ruthless Showdown: Kennedy v Hoffa".  Robert Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa went several rounds in 1956 and the hearings were fierce.  "Bobby" drove to corner the Teamster leader, Hoffa, and incriminate him in his testimony.  This workshop examines the strategies and mental makeup each man exhibited as the tensions rose and the fight ensued.  

Find this workshop in the Community Room at the Northtowne Mall, 1500 N. Clinton St., Defiance.

 

1:00 P.M. Susan Marie Frontczak gives a workshop titled "Erma Bombeck - Feminist?" where she talks about Erma and her column "At Wit's End" taking on Betty Friedan - the author of "The Feminine Mystique" and Mirabel Morgan "The Total Woman" and the fight to figure out women's emerging roles in America's Women's Movement.  This workshop is followed by the movie "Prizewinner of Defiance Ohio".  

The workshop and movie are held at the Huber Opera House, 157 E. High St., Hicksville.

*Note: Jeremy Meier is a professor of theater at Owens Community College in northwest Ohio. He teaches acting and has directed nineteen student productions at the school including Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet. He also has adapted and directed texts for the stage, including Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and American Salvage by Bonnie Jo Campbell. Meier has created several original solo performances for Ohio Chautauqua, including Robert F. Kennedy, John Dillinger and Oliver Hazard Perry. In 2016, Meier was awarded a grant by Ohio Humanities to pilot the state’s first Chautauqua Training Program for new scholars learning to develop original figures based on historical figures.
