Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) was founded in 1947 and is based in Washington, DC. There are currently 68 chapters in 35 states.

The Triad Chapter of Americans United was organized in 2004 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Local chapter members pay dues to the National Association. The Chapter also welcomes interested individuals who are not National members to participate in Chapter meetings and other activities.

Americans United, working with its network of local chapters, seeks to raise awareness of the efforts of religious zealots to undermine the US Constitutional requirement that the State not support or interfere with individual religious liberty.

Among other activities, Americans United seeks to eliminate:
  • Sectarian prayer at government sponsored functions.
  • Efforts of teachers to proselytize in the classroom.
  • The intrusion of religious myth into the teaching of science in public schools.
  • Public funding of religious schools.
  • Erection of religious monuments in government spaces.
  • Rewriting of history textbooks.
