21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace & Unity Parade
21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace & Unity Parade
Walking along the route of the 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace & Unity Parade recurring thoughts that I have every time I shoot one of these things crowd my head: "Is this parade ever going to end? I should have stretched more-my back is killing me. God, I hope I can hold it and not have to use one of those smelly port-a-potties." But if you absolutely must attend one parade you can't go wrong with this one, which takes place along MLK Jr. Blvd. Some of my instant memories from Saturday were: A Thug Life G on a clown-size bicycle bantering from the sidelines with a Cowboy riding in a bling'd out saddle from the back of a large parade horse. Impossibly cute children carrying suggestively misspelled signs and wearing awesome self affirming T-Shirts. 6th District Councilperson Dee Andrews revealing his true Super Hero colors when paramedics released a woman possibly suffering from heat exhaustion into his custody after making him promise to find her water and shade. But mostly the over-all sense of community, pride and Obama inspired excitement that this year will be one unlike any we have ever experienced before. In a good way though--not the Chinese curse kinda way which sarcastically entreats us to "live in interesting times".
Speaking of scary black men... Heh. I talked to this guy for ten minutes, amazed that #1: he wanted to actually come to this and walk around and #2: he did so wearing a Martin Luther King Jr and Barack Obama "Fulfilling The Dream" t-shirt on. I stopped him and HAD to talk to him after I saw that. Super fucking nice, totally relaxed and just taking in the sights. I asked him if anyone had given him shit and he was like, "Oh, they'll give me LOOKS, but they ain't coming up and saying shit..." I wish I wasn't in a hurry to take photos and get back home, I would have loved to hang out with him longer. (On the drive home, I heard the talk radio station interviewing a black guy who was challenging the Tea Party and their ideals. I'm reeeeeeally hoping it was him and am trying to figure it out for certain.)
