All American Awards (then)
This building on N.C. 107 near the Locust Creek intersection was most recently home to Jack the Dipper ice cream shop (then photo), which has announced a planned move to East Sylva Shopping Center. The top photo is believed to have been taken around 1973, when Wally Williams, a retired Marine who had been Western Carolina University’s athletic director, opened his trophy shop, All American Awards. Prior to that, the building, which is owned by Kenneth Gillis, had been abandoned for years after housing Gillis Store during World War II. Bill Peterson bought the All American Awards business from Williams and moved it to the Court Hill Inn; Jim Simpson bought All American Awards in 1980 and located it in the same building as his equipment rental business located next to Bryson’s Farm Supply. – Herald file photo (then) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove.
