Land Rover Life
Land Rover Life
Land Rover Discovery 3 - G4 Challenge As the primary aim of the G4 Challenge was a publicity venture it was beneficial to demonstrate to the public the off-road abilities of the vehicles in as close to showroom specification as possible. The only modification that actually affected the off-road ability of the vehicles was the fitment of Goodyear Wrangler mud terrain tyres. However, these tyres are available on all Land Rovers as a factory tyre option. The only other main off-road modification was the addition of a Warn winch for self recovery. All accessories fitted to the G4 vehicles are available to Land Rover buyers as factory fitment from the 'Accessories' catalogue. It was important that the incredible off-road ability of the vehicles was simply because they had come from the Land Rover stable, not because of radical modifications that had been made to them. The specification of the vehicles included: * Tangiers Orange Paintwork * G4 Challenge decals and event plaques, sponsor’s decals (Warn and Goodyear) * Warn winch * Recovery points * Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tyres * Front and rear mud guards/flaps * Internal Load guard/dog guard * Front and Rear Light guards * Roof rack and ladder (which usually carried a mountain bike and kayak for use by the competitors in the adventure sports events) * Mantec snorkel/raised air intake * Mantec Sump Guard * Mantec Fuel Tank Guard * Sill protectors (molded plastic on Discovery 2 and 3, Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports; chequerplate on Defender and Freelander 1) * 4 Roof Mounted Spotlights (Some Discovery 3’s had two A-bar mounted driving lights) * Rear Worklight * GPS Navigation Equipment * Suspension as standard from the factory. * No Bull bars (Freelanders and Discovery 3’s were fitted with Land Rover’s own rubber A-bars) * No Roll Cage. Unlike the Camel Trophy vehicles Land Rover decided not to fit roll cages to the G4 Challenge vehicles. Roll cages were deemed unnecessary as the off-roading encountered was not expected to be as extreme as that of the Camel Trophy. Also full roll cages would add extra weight and adversely affect the vehicles handling. Their fitment would also be difficult on newer vehicles such as the Discovery 3 and Range Rover because of their complex body structures and electrical systems, which would make it difficult to route the roll cages. Furthermore, modern vehicle safety standards mean that the current range of Land Rover models are more able to protect their occupants in a roll-over situation than the vehicles used on the Camel Trophy in the 1980s and 1990s. Gaskell & Chambers Dalex 'two way beer fountain 6130', 1954
Gaskell & Chambers were once Britain's biggest manufacturers of bar and pub fittings, based in Birmingham, and many examples of their 'Dalex' handpumps still survive. One 'speciality' for the Scottish pub market was the water engine and tall font system - required because in Scotland it was required that you saw what the bartender was actually putting into your glass. This page shows the famous 6130 font, that came in various classy colours, with the two way tap that allowed beer from the barrel or via suction from the drip tray. The Bow Bar in Edinburgh when restored many years ago had a wonderful set of such fonts as the owner was a real enthusiast.
