Aircraft Parking Bays


Aircraft Parking Area, also known as airport apron, is the area of an airport where the aircrafts are parked, loaded, unloaded, refueled or boarded. It is a restricted area where access is controlled, there are 6 types of apron namely Simple, Linear, Curvilinear, Open, Pier and Satellite.


Taoyuan International Airport adopts the concept of:


LINEAR

Advantages:

  1. Offers ease of access and short walking distances for passengers from the transit area to the aircraft contact gates

  2. Terminal can be expanded further by extending the current terminal linearly or developing another linear terminal with connectors

CURVILINEAR

Advantages:

  1. Simple organisational principles

  2. Allows future expansion of terminal

  3. Allow more aircraft to park "nose-in" to the terminal building while maintaining short walking distances from the airport entrance to the aircraft gate

    Potential bottleneck:

    1. Linear Concept Apron  

    Most of the apron concept adopted by Taoyuan International Airport are linear, the disadvantages of linear apron concept becomes evident as the length of the terminal building increases. Walking distances between facilities, particularly distantly separated gates, become excessive for the passenger whose itinerary requires a change in aircraft at the airport.

    2. Training of staffs

    Another bottleneck would be training of ground staffs at the aircraft parking areas.

    Without adequate training and supervision, it may result in accidents with the probability of damage to equipment, aircraft or both. Damage in equipment may also render the gate inoperable for an undetermined amount of time and thus causing congestions while waiting for available gates, hence leading to a build-up of aircrafts.


    Solutions:
  • In order to solve the problem caused by liner concept apron, Taoyuan International Airport can adopt other concepts such as pier, satellite, open and curvilinear which would not increase the length of the terminal building.
  • Employee Training and Development, it is a program that helps employees learn specific knowledge or skills to improve performance in their current roles. This will also help in employee growth and future performance, hence this will in turn decrease the probability of an accident from happening at the aircraft parking areas.
