ArizOTA meeting update

February 9, 2010

General Info:

-  Mentors available through ArizOTA members

-  Special Interest groups have workshops and meetings throughout the valley. Pediatrics, Animal Assisted Therapy, Hand Therapy, Gerontology, Psychosocial Hollistic OT,etc…

-  Next meeting May 11, 2010 @ St. Joseph’s Outpatient Rehabilitation

AOTF scholarship funds- Application Due Dec 2nd.

- Several scholarships are available through AOTF for the 09-10 year

-  One (Adelaide Ryerson Smith Memorial Award) is available specifically for Arizona students. Board mentioned that scholarships were not awarded in the past years and are working on getting the funds possibly reallocated this year in addition to making this scholarship opportunity more known among student in AZ.

Professional Development Opportunities

-  Spring Workshop, Sat April 24th, Phoenix Children’s Hospital

Kathy Bryte will present “make-and-take” visual activities for students/children

          AT Still’s Melissa Clark will be presenting about kinesio taping

          Volunteers are needed for set up

-  Fall Conference, Sept 10 & 11th at Black Canyon Conference Center

          Julie Harper will be speaking about SI concerns

          AARP representative

          Kathy Mulhand – seating and positioning

          Winifred Schultz-Krohn

Miscellaneous

-  Phoenix Sister Cities International Writers with Disabilities have a poem competition. Poems must be 32 lines or less and authors must be 19 years or older

-   AMA is trying to increase their scope of practice. Some areas in the medical field, including OT, are concerned that this would infringe on their patients and area of expertise

-  There is an increased push to use Evidence Based Practice designs in Occupational Therapy
