Baggage Allowances on Flights

Carry-on Baggage

You can carry on one bag plus one personal item per passenger as long as it:
• Weighs less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
• Does not exceed 45 inches when you total length plus width plus height.

Here are some examples of personal items:

• Male or female purse
• Briefcase
• Laptop computer (All laptop/computers must be carried aboard and cannot be checked)
• Camera case
• Diaper bag
• Items of a similar or smaller size to those listed above, such as Portable Electronic Devices.

These additional items are okay to carry on and don't count towards your allowance:

• Food items for immediate consumption
• Assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches, provided passenger is dependent on them
• One box or bag of duty free merchandise
• A coat or jacket
• An umbrella
• One item of reading material

Most countries now prohibit or strictly limit the size of containers with liquids, gels, aerosols, and pastes that you can take in your carry-on luggage. Empty containers that could contain liquids are usually prohibited as well.

Examples of liquids and gels included in these security measures are:

• Beverages
• Creams
• Hair gel
• Hair spray
• Shampoo
• Suntan lotion
• Toothpaste
• Other items of similar consistency

You'll go smoothly through the security checkpoints in most countries if you follow these guidelines for your carry-on baggage.

• Do not pack or carry any empty containers.
• Limit all liquids, gels, aerosols, and pastes to a maximum container size of 3.4 oz/100ml.
• Place all such items in a quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag.
• Remove your quart-size bag from your carry-on and place in the provided bin as you approach the checkpoint.

Duty-free Items

Some countries have started a program that lets you purchase duty-free items that are placed in a specially sealed bag by the vendor. You can then travel within that country or region with the item in your possession or in your carry-on. If your travel takes you through a security checkpoint in a different country that does not recognize the same program, you may or may not have the opportunity to place the item in your checked baggage. If you're unable to place the item in your checked baggage, it may be confiscated

Additional Suggestions

These simple hints will usually help you to breeze right through security checkpoints.
• Travel light—minimal clutter will expedite the screening process.
• Leave lighters at home.
• Leave your pocket-knives, files, scissors, and any sharp objects at home or put them in your checked baggage.
• Be ready to take off your shoes and put belts, mobile phones, and metal objects in your carry-on.
• Take your laptop out of its case and place it in the container provided for you.

Checked Baggage

You can check two bags per passenger free of charge.
Each bag must:
• Weigh 50 pounds (22.5 kg) or less.
• Not exceed 62 inches when you total length plus width plus height.
• The free weight allowance is 70 pounds (32 kg) for tickets purchased in Brazil.
With the exception of original factory-sealed boxes that will be accepted on a standby basis, we do not accept boxes as checked baggage to Central or South America (except Brazil, Mexico, and Chile) at any time of the year.

Children's Baggage Allowance

Children’s baggage allowances are based in part by the fare paid for their travel.
If children are traveling for free, they don’t have a baggage allowance.
For 10% of the adult fare (for travel between countries), children are allowed one checked bag, plus one checked fully collapsible stroller or push-chair.
For 50% or more of the adult fare, children are entitled to the standard baggage allowance.

Strollers & Child Restraint Seats

You may check child restraint seats and fully-collapsible strollers. They won't count toward your allowance of two checked baggage items.
If you want to use a child restraint seat or stroller to transport your child through the airport, that's fine. Strollers need to be checked at the gate by a Delta agent. Child restraint seats may be checked, or in certain cases, they may be brought on board.
