The Women of Madina
Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad ibn Sa'd is one of the greatest authorities on Muslim biography. His collection, the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir, is one the most important and earliest surviving biographical collection of narrations. Ibn Sa'd was born in 148 / 764 in Basra, and died in 23/845. He moved to Baghdad where he studied under various people, especially Muhammad ibn 'Umar al-Waqidi. He also visited Kufa and Madina in the course of his quest for knowledge. Many authorities have testified to his reliability.
This is an abridged translation of volume eight of Ibn Sa'd's Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir. This deals exclusively with the women who met the Prophet (SAAS) or transmitted from him. The Tabaqat is a great storehouse of information which gives the reader a vivid taste and feel for what the people of Madina must have been like and how extraordinary they were. It makes the Companions of the Prophet come alive for the reader.
