Creepy from the inside too.
Creepy from the inside too.
As I wandered through these houses I wondered about the people who lived there. Why did they live out in the middle of nowhere? They clearly had kids (more than just this toy was left behind). Where did the kids go to school? Why did they leave? When did they leave? This is the biggest mystery. The place was in a state of advanced decay. Broken windows, roofs caved in, awnings falling over. Yet, I found multiple newspapers dated December, 2007!!!!!! I found bills with dates in 2007. Did all this happen in less than a year? I was totally creeped out wandering through this complex. There were four duplexes, a house, mechanics garage, gas station, and multiple trailers on jack stands. I was only brave enough to go into rooms that were already open (no opening closed doors for me!), and only after I had looked through the windows. I kept expecting to hear the eerie laughter of ghost children (why are kids so creepy in this setting?). At one point I heard this high pitched whining and rustling sound and almost bolted. It was the wind blowing through a set of mini blinds. This doll's legs were in the back bedroom. I had a strange urge to reattach them. I didn't.

Virgil Skinner served fourteen years for a murder he didn't commit. He's finally been exonerated, but he can't escape the gang he joined in order to survive. They'll do anything to keep him from telling what he knows. And if they can't get to Virgil they'll go after his sister and her kids.
The California Department of Corrections needs someone to infiltrate another gang, one that's taking control of the state's most notorious supermax. Virgil agrees to do it under an alias—in exchange for his sister's protection.
Chief Deputy Warden Peyton Adams is opposed to having Virgil in her prison. How will she protect him if things go bad? Besides, she's far too attracted to him; she might even be falling in love with him. That makes her all the more desperate to keep him safe—and it gives him someone else to lose.
