    wireless router
  • A networking device that is a combination of an access point and a router.  These devices are usually used in private homes where client PCs can be anywhere in the house (and thus use WiFi to connect), and the network is a broadband connection provided by an ISP.
  • Wireless routers are actually routers with Ethernet plus wireless access points so that they have both wired and/or wireless at the same time.
  • A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router but also includes the functions of a wireless access point. It is commonly used to allow access to the Internet or a computer network without the need for a cabled connection.
    ip address
  • An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label that is assigned to any device participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication between its nodes.
  • A unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer attached to the Internet
  • (Internet Protocol address) A number assigned to each computer's or other device's network interface(s) which are active on a network supporting the Internet Protocol, in order to distinguish each network interface (and hence each networked device) from every other network interface anywhere on
  • (IP addresses) Internet Protocol addresses, the numeric identification number that refers to a specific machine on the Internet.

Router constantly crashing? Check. Having issues with the local DNS server, even with the router not attached? Check. Grainy-ass photo? Check. Had to upgrade my router's firmware today, as well as call our ISP to get them to fix a DNS server they had that was causing my router to crash. They said they didn't have any way to fix it (or rather that it wasn't broken) and after many failed attempts to read up on the subject online (hard to do with a broken internet connection) I discovered that a newer version of DD-WRT could ignore the extra requests the local server was erroneously sending. I know it's not just my router, too, since if i hooked up any PC in my hizzouse without the router it got the same spotty horrible performance. Anyhoo, a lengthly upgrade later (this router HATES to get an IP address over DHCP after an upgrade, takes countless reboots of it and the modem) it's finally back online, albeit with some changes still needed. Usually when I upgrade my router's firmware I'll take snapshots of all the pages to find my port forwarding information, etc, but this time I decided I needed the equivalent of a router fast to flush out its' system, so I just did a hard reset and deleted all the data. Did I regret it later? Surprisingly no. I had 10s of entries (can't say hundreds if it wasn't over 100) in my port-forwarding pages for all the various games I've played over the years, most of which I have no intent to ever pick up again, so why keep all the entries? The port-forwarding information is easily looked up online, so I decided I can just re-forward ports as my future gaming dictates. Luckily I've got all the wireless security information in my head, so setting it up to work without setting up the connection on each and every device was easy. I can't remember all the MAC addresses, so I have a feeling one of the PS3s might not work at the moment, but I'll fix it tomorrow, as I work early in ze morning. Oh, right, in yesterday's post I alluded to the fact that there might be information in today's post about yesterday at work. All I'll say is I was there just shy of 10 hours, from 7ish PM 'til 5ish AM, and that everything was messed up due to a system change/upgrade. It sucked, and I didn't attend the Magic Night again. I'll be attending the local launch of the next Magic set--Scars of Mirrodin--on Sunday though, so I'll finally get some Magic in. Can't wait!
