Parent Pre Camp Meeting and Booster Fair Reminder

posted by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated ]

Hello Band Families!!

As the students are getting excited thinking about Band Camp, we are hoping to get the parents involved in the fun also! We have two upcoming events for parents, both held on Tuesday July 23rd:

Parent Pre-Camp Meeting - Tuesday July 23rd at 6:45pm.
Band camp is such a rewarding time of fun and growth for the students, but sometimes it can give parents a bit of anxiety. Knowledge is a great tool to help you send your child off to camp with confidence.  At our Pre-Camp meeting we will be there to answer any questions or concerns that you may have about camp.  You will also be able to meet many of the chaperones attending camp this year. All parents new to marching band are encouraged to make every effort to attend.

Booster Fair - Tuesday July 23rd following the pre-camp meeting,
Please join us in the cafeteria for our annual Booster Fair where you can find out all about our Band Booster/Parent organization and how to get involved with this wonderful band family.

Check out Volunteering Opportunities:
Even if you are new to the band, don’t be afraid to jump in. Volunteering is a great way to make new friends and truly, band parents (and students of course) are the BEST.

There are many open co-chair positions and volunteer opportunities.  Please join us at the booster fair on Tuesday to learn more!  YOU are needed and we truly appreciate your willingness to give of your time and talents to help the band.

We would like to mention a few urgent needs for the coming year:

1.  BBQ Fundraising Event needs 2 co-chairs – This event is an important fundraiser for the band and helps to keep everyone’s fair share costs down.  We already have a great BBQ plan in place.  The site has been reserved, dads trained to cook the barbecue, and logistics worked out.  AND we have some awesome veteran band parents who will help you get started.  We need someone with organizational skills to recruit volunteers and implement the plan in October.

2.  Yahoo! Mail -We need one more co-chair to complete our Yahoo! mail team.  As you may have discovered, the band likes to communicate via email!  If you can forward email and do simple proof reading and editing, you can do this job.  This is a great job for someone who prefers to work somewhat on their own from home.

3.  PR Chair - promotes our band news internally (via Athens Alerts & the phone messaging system) & externally to our community (newspaper, TV, radio etc). You will get to work with many of our committees throughout the year.

If you are interested in one of these positions, just email president@athensdriveband.com .

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

posted Jul 16, 2019, 2:42 PM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Jul 16, 2019, 2:43 PM ]

Hello Band Families!

Band season is upon us! Are you looking for ways to add funds to your student’s band account? The Scrip Program is the perfect way!

If anyone is thinking "what is a Scrip Program?"  You can skip ahead a bit for a little introduction.  :)

Our next SCRIP order for physical gift cards is coming up on Tuesday, July 16th!  (That’s today!!!) Please submit your order by Tuesday at midnight.  The order should be ready for pick up at the precamp parent meeting and booster fair on Tuesday, July 23rd.  Look for Martha and the Scrip sign.  Contact Martha at the Scrip email address if you need to pick them up at a different time.

Remember that this order is for physical gift cards.  ScripNow e-gift cards can be ordered at any time.  Please note that PrestoPay is the easiest way to pay for your scrip orders. Let me know if you need help setting this up. If you selected to pay by check, your checks need to be delivered to me or Martha by July 16th or your order will not be placed.  There is a shipping charge of $8.50 that is split between all the order families.  It is usually around $1-$2.

*************************************************************************************************************

Why am I so passionate about the Scrip program?  Is it because the band program makes money off of your Scrip purchases?  No!  100% of the rebates go directly into YOUR band account.  I  encourage all band families to use Scrip because I know the real value of the program.  You can easily make hundreds of dollars every year for your band account!  If you want more information about how to effectively use Scrip to earn big $$, contact me and I'll be happy to help.

ARE YOU NEW TO THE IDEA OF SCRIP??  READ ON!

Scrip cards (and grocery cards) are the only band fundraisers that put your every day spending dollars to work – FREE MONEY!!!  This email contains information about the Scrip Program and how it can positively change the balance on your band account.  Also attached is a flyer that has information about the Scrip program and some helpful hints and tips for using the program and placing orders.

WHAT IS SCRIP?
Great Lakes Scrip Center offers gift cards to over 700 of the country’s biggest brands, including grocery, department stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, home improvement, and more. Just by using Scrip to pay for your normal purchases, you can easily bank money to your student band account. It’s time to put your shopping dollars to work! A complete listing of participating companies is available at www.shopwithscrip.com.

HOW DOES IT WORK?  Scrip cards are regular gifts cards that you purchase at face value.  The retailer then gives a rebate, usually between 2%-14% of the face value, directly into YOUR band account.  For example, if you purchased a $100 Belk gift card, you pay $100 for the card and have $100 to spend at Belk.  Then Belk donates 8% ($8.00) to your band account.  Free Money!  You will be amazed and astounded at how quickly it adds up simply by spending money “differently” through Scrip

WHAT TYPE OF GIFT CARDS ARE AVAILABLE?  Scrip has three different options for purchasing gift cards.  Many companies offer all 3 gift card options but the options available vary by company.

1. Physical Gift Cards:  We order these as a Band group about once a month.  You order these cards online any time during the month then a Band group order is submitted, typically a week before our monthly band parent meetings.  You can either pay for your cards at the time of ordering using the PrestoPay service or by delivering a check prior to the group order placement.  See below for details on payment methods.  You will receive an email about one week in advance of order placement as a reminder.  A few days later we receive the group’s gift cards and distribute them to you, usually at the monthly Band Booster meeting.  Physical gift cards are great for gifts or for planned (and controlled) spending.

2. ScripNow E-Card:  Make purchases online or at a physical store or have a meal at a restaurant but hop over to the Scrip website before you pay.  Buy a ScripNow gift card with PrestoPay to use as payment for your purchases.  These cards are available for you to use within minutes of purchase.

3. Reload:  With re-loadable physical gift cards, you have the flexibility to add money to the gift card anytime using PrestoPay!  These gift cards work well for places you regularly shop.  Note that not all physical gift cards are reloadable.  You will know it's reloadable if the Reload option is available.

GETTING STARTED:  Set up your own personal account at www.shopwithscrip.com and link to the Athens Drive Band Boosters with the enrollment code 3BDECC2F2L1L.  Feel free to contact me if you have problems and I will help you through the process.

PAYMENT METHODS:
PrestoPay:  This is the preferred and easiest method of payment.  It is Scrip's secure service to purchase gift cards by using funds directly from your bank account.  Set up PrestoPay from your Scrip account on the www.shopwithscrip.com website.
Check:  Make your check out to ADHS Band Boosters and deliver it to me before the order date to be included in the monthly order

CURRENT SPECIALS:  In addition to offering great contributions on every day gift cards, Scrip runs specials and flash sales on a regular basis.  This means that a retailer's usual rebate percentage is temporarily increased.  For example, The Gap may increase it's normal rebate of 14% to 18%.  Also, a few times a year, Scrip has a ThankScripping Day.  This is a day where many, many retailers have increased rebates for that day only.  Take advantage of these specials!  Even if you don’t “need” anything right now, you can purchase cards ahead of time that you know you will use in the future.  Set up your Scrip account so that you receive email alerts for active specials.  Check out the "What's New" tab to see all the recent listings.

Any questions, please send to scrip@athensdriveband.com

Happy Scripping!

Band Families,
We need some clean milk jugs for a game at band camp.  If you can help feel free to drop them off at percussion practices on July 9th or 16th (between 10 am and 4pm).  You can also bring them to pre-camp.  Please leave them by the uniform closets in the band room.

Thanks for the help!

Chaperones Needed for Pre-Camp

Can you believe Marching Band Season is less than 3 weeks away?? Making life long friends, feelings of pride as you watch your freshman student march down Jaguar Park drive for their first football game, amazing music, wowing us at all the competitions!!! This is what we have to look forward to in the next few months!! Can’t wait!

Your first opportunity to get a glimpse of this year’s program is coming up July 22-25. We need parents who are willing to chaperone Pre-Camp practices. This is such a pleasant way to serve the band. Bring your lawn chair and a water bottle and watch this year’s marching band take shape. We need percussion parents to chaperone from 1:45 - 5pm and then we need parents from winds, guard and percussion to chaperone from 6:15-10:00. You just need to report to the band hallway to find out where the kids will be practicing. Don’t forget to register as a volunteer with Wake County if you plan to chaperone.  It only takes 5 minutes and can be done at a Wake County School library.

If you can chaperone, please click here:

PLEASE NOTE - there is a "parent pre-camp meeting/booster fair" being held on July 23rd  at 6.45pm, so if you are a new band parent or just want to attend this event, please avoid signing up for this time slot. Thanks.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at chaperones@athensdriveband.com

We look forward to meeting you freshmen parents and can’t wait to catch up with all the rest of you!!

Full marching band practices begin with Pre-Camp starting July 22.  All the dates can be found by clicking  HERE.

CHECKLISTS
Please see the checklists below to aid you in your preseason preparations.  More detailed information about what to bring to band camp will be sent later in July.

To ensure a smooth start to the upcoming season, the following items should be addressed PRIOR to pre-camp:

PRIOR TO PRE-CAMP

_____  WCPSS Parental Consent & Student Medical Information. A few of these forms still have not been turned in.  If you have not turned in this form, please do so as soon as possible.  The school nurse must have them and review them before your student goes to camp.  The form can be found by clicking.
HERE Just scroll down to the bottom to the WCPSS forms.  You can turn in the form to the Athens Drive front office in Doc’s name.  Or email a copy to Doc at jmarkoch@wcpss.net

_____  Food Allergies and other Dietary Restrictions - The cafeteria at Wesleyan College offers a wide variety of foods, easily accommodating most diets.  We would be happy to share menus with parents during. pre-camp if there are any specific concerns.  Food allergies and diet restrictions should have been noted at registration.  Please e-mail to president@athensdriveband.com as soon as possible if you have changes or questions so that we can properly plan for meals and snacks

DUE FIRST DAY OF PRE-CAMP (July 22, 2019) – Complete, print, and bring the following paperwork.  Both forms can be found HERE. Just scroll down to the bottom to the WCPSS forms.

DURING PRE-CAMP WEEK

_____  Pre-camp Parent Meeting - Tuesday, July 23rd at 6:45 p.m. in the band room.  At the meeting, we will be going over the final details for camp and answering any questions you might have.  Please make every effort to attend! Following the meeting, please join us in the cafeteria to check out our Booster Fair. Our committee chairs will have informational booths set up to help you find the perfect spot to get involved!

_____ Students–Band Camp Roommate Request Form:  During pre-camp students will be given a roommate request form. Due to logistical difficulties with moving beds, we can only assign two students per room.  We will be happy to assist students with finding roommates during pre-camp week and will work with section leaders to find a great fit for everyone!  This form is DUE WEDNESDAY night at the end of the evening.

_____  Donations:  Towels, sunscreen, bug spray.  While you are cleaning out the closets over the summer, please save your old towels for the band.  We need lots of old towels to dry off instruments and other equipment, especially if we have wet weather. Band camp is hot, sunny and buggy!  We’d like for everyone to bring their own sunscreen and bug spray, but inevitably we need more!  Any donations are very much appreciated!

We are looking forward to seeing you at pre-camp!  Please let us know if you have any questions.
