What is Assistive Technology?
It is anything that will assist a student with a disability to access and benefit from the general education curriculum.
"Any item, piece of equipment, product system, wether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability." (IDEA ~ 2004)

What students should be considered for the use of assistive technology?
Every student with a disability that is on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 plan should be considered for using assistive technology that will assist them in accessing and/or benefitting from the general education curriculum. This should be done at least at each annual IEP meeting or 504 plan meeting. The discussion should ideally include the entire planning team.
