How Firm thy Friendship, O-HI-O

Dr. Laura Harris announced her resignation from Ohio State's Athletic Training Program last month after 13 years of exceptional teaching and mentoring. Dr. Harris has an exciting opportunity to touch the lives of future Physician Assistants at Ohio University's new Dublin Campus. Faculty, staff, and students say "see you later" with heavy hearts and wish her the best as she takes on a new, exciting challenge in her career.

"When I was a junior going into my senior year, Laura bought me lunch at the street meat vendor in front of the main hospital. We then sat down and had an amazing conversation which helped shape me and refocus my desire to be an athletic trainer. She gave me much needed advice on areas that were lacking while boosting my confidence with positive feedback on my skills. I appreciate everything she has done for me."

- Shaun Barnhouse MS, AT - OSU AT Class of 2009, OSU On-campus preceptor

"From the first day Laura arrived on campus, her goal was to build on the tradition of athletic training at Ohio State. As an alum of Ohio State, I appreciated her first few years when she took the time to get to know the history of our program. She spent time learning about those who helped build the core of athletic training at Ohio State and incorporated those lessons into her ideals. She was able to carry on the legacy of Ernie, Billy, Linda, Bords, all the people before us, without ever meeting them. Our alums will always be grateful!!!!"

- Angie Beisner MA, AT -OSU AT Class of 1996, OSU On-campus preceptor

"Laura is a phenomenal professional and an amazing mentor to her students. She truly cares about the well being of every individual who walks into her office and would do anything to help her students. She will surely be missed."

- Dani Coppes- Senior Athletic Training Student

"My favorite memory about Dr. Harris involved finding out about our rotations. She told me I was with wrestling and I asked how she knew me so well and told her I was so excited I could cry. She then proceed to laugh at me for the next ten minutes as I proceed to cry."

- Patty Estock- Junior Athletic Training Student

We love and will miss you, Laura! Thank you for all you have done!

Holiday Traditions

The officers of AT Club started a new tradition this year with a program wide holiday dinner. Turkey, ham, mac and cheese, pies and cookies of all sorts filled the atrium, along with staff, faculty, off-campus preceptors and students of all levels! Christmas music set the mood as students took part in an ugly sweater contest and white elephant gift exchange.

An Army of One

This year the Athletic Training Club at The Ohio State University wanted to show its appreciation for our military and all that they do for our country through the Adopt-A-Soldier program. Adopt-A-Solider is exactly what the title implies; the program gives a name and current address of an active duty soldier that may not have many family or friends able to send care packages. The club has adopted two soldiers, Tyler and Giovanna. The first packages were Buckeye themed and contained many items average Americans may take for granted. Staff members and students alike have helped make this project a success so far, and we would like to thank all for their contributions! Christmas letters to the soldiers are also being delivered by Santa! Contact Lauren Angel at osuatclub@gmail.com if you would like more information on contributing to our next package.

Running With The Buckeyes

The Athletic Training Club's annual 5K Running with the Buckeyes is coming up. It's 10am April 6th, 2014 at Fred Beekman Park on OSU's campus. This year proceeds will benefit Advocates for Injured Athletes; their goal is to educate student athletes on emergent situations, and ultimately to get an athletic trainer in every high school across the country. In January, sign up information will be posted on the OSU Athletic Trainng Club's website, and there will be a link connecting to the actual sign up page. Donations are accepted and we are currently looking for sponsors. If you would like to donate or sponsor this year's 5K, please contact Amy Behan, email behan.13@osu.edu or phone 614-564-7399. We look forward to seeing everyone at the race in April.
