Blazars as sources of high-energy neutrinos
The IceCube discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos has opened a new window into the high-energy Universe. In contrast to gamma-ray photons and cosmic rays, high-energy neutrinos are not affected by ambient photon fields and intergalactic magnetic fields. They are, therefore, a unique probe of the astrophysical hadronic accelerators! Blazars have been long suggested as sources for hadronic acceleration to energies beyond the knee of the cosmic-ray spectrum. In light of the recent IceCube neutrino detections, the hadronic model for blazar emission becomes more relevant than ever before. In this talk, I will review the basic theoretical scenarios for neutrino emission and present the current status of hadronic blazar modeling in the context of IceCube results.
