Special Projects in Astronomy: Astronomy Research Techniques

The objective of this course is to introduce astronomy majors to the methods and tools professional astronomers use in their work. Students will gain hands on experience using real astrophysical data. This semester the course will focus on high energy astrophysics covering the X-ray and gamma-ray regime.  The course will cover galactic (e.g. black holes and neutron stars in our Galaxy) and extragalactic sources (e.g. Active Galactic Nuclei) at an introductory level. The course will involve weekly discussions followed by independent lab time and weekly assignments. The material covered in class will prepare the students for a final research project.
