Education institutions that IDC interviewed in 2Q06 have adopted a variety of enterprise solutions, primarily security and data management, but also ERP, CRM, and analytics.
In this study, IDC provides an analysis of the results of the IDC Vertical Market Survey carried out in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K. The results are based on 39 interviews in the education market. This study, which analyzes enterprise solution adoption and investment plans, is the second in a series of studies that include analysis of IS budget plans, analysis of industry-specific solution adoption and investment plans, and analysis of adoption of new technologies
"Vendors that want to capture a share of future investments must offer custom enhancement of existing systems or packaged upgrades, must support end-users in the development of a comprehensive security framework, and offer some applications, modules, or functionalities through software as a service contracts," said Massimiliano Claps, program manager of public sector research, IDC European Vertical Markets

Western European Education Sector, 2005, Vertical Specific Solutions Adoption and Investment Plans: An IDC Survey
Industry-specific solutions are key elements in the modernization of the education sector, which, on the one hand, must manage long student life cycles and, on the other hand, need to optimize allocation of resources to limit expenditure. IDC survey suggests that growth of investment will be sustained both in primary/secondary schools and higher education institutions with some expected differences.
In this study, IDC provides an analysis of results of the IDC Vertical Market Survey carried out in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K. The results are based on 90 interviews in the education market. This study analyzes investment priorities and 2005 investment plans for industry-specific solutions.
"IT vendors that want to gain a share of the education market must offer student management systems, portals, and digital learning content. The primary geographical target must be the U.K.," said Massimiliano Claps, program manager, European Vertical Markets.
