Shillong, Meghalaya. It was established on September 1, 1980 and was inaugurated on October 10, 1980 by the then Governor of the North Eastern States.
The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE,) New Delhi, and is managed by the Assam Rifles Public School Society. Classes are provided from IV to XII. Students are also provided training for appearing in entrance tests for National Defence Academy and in various Engineering and Medical Colleges.
The campus has hostel facility for students and staffs, a vegetable farm, bakery, golf course, riding school, school tuck shop, and a well equipped medical center. A 200 acres school campus comprises a modern school building, residential accommodation for students and staff, games fields, a sprawling vegetable farm, a bakery, a golf course, a riding school, a school tuck shop and a well equipped school infirmary.
Deserving children of Officers, JCO’s and other Ranks of the Assam Rifles seek admission. A definite number of seats are available for the children other than those of the Assam Rifles. During the course of +2 stage the students are provided with vocational guidance and career counselling and are encouraged to appear for the Entrance Tests for NDA and engineering & medical colleges etc.
The School is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and prepares the boys for All India Secondary School Examination (Class X) and All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class XII). The study streams are offered at the + 2 stage: i) Science stream ii) Commerce stream iii) Humanities stream. Computer Science has been introduced and the children are encouraged to opt the subject as part of the curriculum. The medium of instruction in the school is English.
The admissions are mainly offered in Classes IV and V on the basis of an entrance test conducted by the school in three subjects i.e. English, Hindi and Mathematics. These tests are sometime in October every year. A few seats are also filled up in the higher classes (except X and XII) on a similar basis. The prospective candidates must be registered before appearing for an Entrance Test to any Class.
While the education of the children of Assam Rifles personnel is highly subsidized, quite a few scholarships are offered to the tribal children of the North Eastern Council on the merit-cum-means basis. The school also admits a few Government of India Merit Scholars every year.
The academic year of the school is divided into three terms: Spring Term (March to May), Monsoon Term (June to August), Autumn Term (September to November). Besides the long winter break there is a short Puja break and a few free weekends. During these breaks, the students are encouraged to join the school organized excursions and treks.
Students are expected to participate in all the games and sports activities in an organized manner as per the school routine. The annual games calendar includes cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, handball, khokho, marathon, hockey, boxing, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics and athletics as important sporting activities. Horse riding, tennis and golf are optional games. All the students begin their daily routine with morning P.T.
