In keeping with our goal of providing practical knowledge that you can use right away, our participating sections sponsor four valuable and informative presentations, with breaks throughout the day to connect with like-minded professionals. This is your opportunity to meet, network and learn from others working in quality-affecting roles in sectors that include healthcare, education, services and manufacturing. 

The conference will be immediately followed by the annual Region 2 Leadership Meeting to discuss award-winning section leadership techniques. Current and interested member leaders (section and regional) are encouraged to participate in this working session.

Session 1: Unity is Strength! Valuing Differences to Enhance Inclusion and Collaboration

Everyone has something to contribute – especially when it comes to problem solving, projects and innovation.   In this session, Judy will share the elements of diversity as the basis for understanding that each person has a unique perspective that is shaped by these elements.  The goal is for participants to leave the session with an appreciation for others’ unique qualities and concepts, and ways to effectively include others to gain the best results from collaboration.   

Presented by Judith Rowe. Judy is passionate about using a strengths-based approach to help others realize their full potential in life. Her company, Judith A. Rowe Consulting, LLC, has a focus on training, facilitation, coaching, and career development. Judy has a varied background with more than 30 years of corporate experience and 7 years as a consultant working with non-profits, corporations, higher education institution, small businesses and individuals to help them discover a strengths-based approach to meeting and exceeding their goals!

 11:15 - 12:15Session 2: Understanding and Using Availability

Availability is a performance measure concerned with assessing a maintained system or device, with respect to its ability to be used when needed. In this lecture, Jorge explains how Availability is measured under its three different definitions (Inherent, Achieved, Operational). Then, we obtain Availability via several methods (theoretical/practical), using both statistical and Markovian approaches. He describes the case where redundancy is used, and where system degradation is allowed. He wraps with a discussion of ways of improving system or device Availability and provides several numerical examples. Key take-aways include Understanding Availability from a practical standpoint, Calculating different Availability ratings, and Practical and Economic ways of enhancing Availability.

Presented by Jorge Romeu. Jorge is an Emeritus Faculty, SUNY Cortland, and a Research Professor, Syracuse University, where he teaches graduate courses in Quality Engineering. He is a Past Syr. Section Chair, Past Region II Director, ASQ Senior Member, holds CRE/CQE ASQ Certifications, and is a Fellow of the Royal Stats society. Jorge has worked with the organization of our CNY Regional Quality Conference since its inception, ten years ago.

Lunch and Networking

 1:00 - 2:00Session 3: Design and Change - Back to the Basics of PDCA

Preventive action needs to start at the beginning of the design or design change and not an afterthought. This session will walk the audience through a design process and the important elements of that process as an introduction to what do we do when things change. The objective of the session will be to have the audience leave with the basics of why when dealing with a design PDCA process will mitigate errors through preventive actions.

Gary Rotzler is a Senior Quality Engineer at Indium Corporation who has supported Indium’s successful journey to obtain their ISO/TS 16949 certification.  As part of this effort, he is actively involved in the culture change in helping others understand the importance of Design and Change control.  A former chair of the Mohawk Valley chapter,  he has achieved his ASQ Certification in Quality/Organizational Excellence, Quality Engineer, Six Sigma Green Belt, and Software Quality.  He has also participated in the construction of the 2010 Green Belt exam.

Session 4: Keeping Current with Credentials - ASQ Certified Supplier Quality Professional

ASQ has recently offered a new certification, Certified Supplier Quality Professional, specifically for those quality professionals dealing with suppliers. Who are these professionals? Most often the “who” depends on the size of the company.  The contents of the body of knowledge can and should be used by everyone in the organization who is tasked with dealing with suppliers. The body of knowledge identifies the things any of these individuals need to know in order to have a successful supplier management program.

Presented by Robert Napoletano. Robert Napoletano, is supplier quality at JMA Wireless, he is a senior member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). He holds ASQ certifications as Supplier Quality Professional, Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, Quality Auditor, and Continuous Improvement Associate. Napoletano has been a member of the Binghamton section of ASQ since 1980 and the Syracuse  section since 2008.  He has held the office of chair, vice chair, and treasurer. He has worked as quality manager in several industries including electronics, metals fabrication, plastics injection molding, fabrication of gasket and flooring materials and heavy rail braking systems.
